No kidding...that is some jacked-up header I've got now, y'all. 'Scuse me. Gonna fix it...looks like it went through a badass Star Trek-style time warp or black hole or something. I hate resizing!! Grr...be back soon...oh, here's what it's supposed to look like:
[image]Sulkbrarian_118779 7348.jpg[/image]
Yyyyyyyyyyyeah. By the by, and once more, sorry for the radio silence. Bizzy, ya know? :P

I'm addicted to Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Is there an antidote? (Besides watching Pat Buchanan or something scary like that.) I just can't help it--I'm not a straight guy, but I desperately want five incredibly fabulous gay men to come to my house and rock my world. Maybe they're free this Saturday? I'll check...
So today I'm applying for yet more liberry jobs and trying not to be a Wendy Whiner about the whole thing. I assuaged my mopey mood by consuming a lovely PB&J samich. Then, the sugar kicked in and now I feel like this.
Scheming about what all to do in Seattle with my DJ. I'm a low-maintenance kinda gal, and I'm going to see HIM, not the city, so I wouldn't care if all we did was sit and hold hands all day. Did I just write that in a publicly-accessible blog? Oh, fantastic. I'm a tool. Moving on.
However we would like to squeeze in a few nifty things while I'm there. I was checking out the zoo; looks pretty snazzy. Also, there's this place, where we plan to make an immediate pilgrimage. Because, I mean, how can you not love a place that sells these luscious treats? :P
DJ is back from visiting family in Canada, and having a kickass time on Vancouver Island! He says that he wishes he could live there and had a terrible time making himself come back home to...well, regular stuff. I figure anyplace that's home to these moppets would be difficult to leave, yes! Where he was is this idyllic, lush, hidden place on V.I. and all they did was fish and swim and hike and eat outdoors and relax. :) Isn't that just the best?? Sigh...just think about how lucky you would be, living someplace like that; surrounded by unspoiled beauty, looking out your front door and seeing breathtaking adventure opportunities every day. Blows the mind...lucky DJ! :D

Okay. First, thanks to everyone who has been visiting the wonderland that is fling fling! You guys rock and I love your comments and blogs too! Secondly, if you like this blog, you will love this one. It is.......a masterpiece. What can I say? Show the love!!!
More positions to apply for this week in Libraryland, thank jeebus. This is just getting out of hand...I am going to be a very good librarian; I just need someone to give me that chance, you know? Sometime soon I will tell you more about my love for librarianship and children and stuff like that. :D Meanwhile, have a look here, here, and here to understand more about the whole thing. It's just the tip of the iceberg... :P
Gonna try to see Open Range tomorrow. Because the killin', you know, it's a good thing--like Martha sez. I like that part in the trailer: "You the one that killed our friend?" "That's right." BLAMMO!!! No muss, no fuss. Yep. He had killed Kevin Costner's friend. You don't do that. So, consequently, that man needed killin'. It's like the mob, y'know. Or, as in Ren and Stimpy: "The Lord loves a hangin', that's why he gave us necks."
Later, taters.

08.14.03 (1:23 am) [edit]
Evening, folks. Had a schizo kinda day, computer still jacked up from that unfortunate go-around with everyone's favorite worm du jour. Finally got that all worked out, then spent some minutes dealing with this assclown, whose windbag playground taunts to this correspondent over certain sections of the PATRIOT Act I plan now to simply ignore, and basically, just fake-sneeze his name along with an exclamation of "assclown!!" into my sleeve every time he embarrasses himself. Which, um, looks to be fairly often. (Mary Minow and Judith Krug: my personal twin heroines of freedom of speech.)
After that, had a favorite old-skool-style dinner of down-home turnip greens, Vidalia onions, country ham, blackeyed peas, and homemade (not that craptastic Jiffy nonsense, no indeed, friends) cornbread. Aw hail yeeeah. :P Pimpin' ain't easy...
Then logged in here to enjoy the nifty aesthetic changes tBlog has made. I like! Tell me what you think! I think it's much more readable. Soon, HTML. Soooooon. I swear...
DJ and I are in spasms of delight over our upcoming tete-a-tete, with a particular highlight being this fine ensemble, gracing the Showbox while I am there. Seriously, are you saved? Best be.
Only foot-stamping bit about the whole thing is, I'm gonna miss Bumbershoot, the White Stripes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and...appropriately-melancholy sigh...my Surrealism -lovin' lads from the UK, the Clientele, oft-mentioned fondly in these pages. It is a very good thing my DJ will be there or I would pout for real instead of this faux pouting which you see before you now. :P
DJ and his brother had a spiffy time at tonight's Mariners game; I'm rather relieved that my Redbirds won't be in town during my visit. Otherwise, DJ and I would have to sit on opposite sides of the stadium. Interleague play will not rear its' ugly head in our monkey business, at least not for now! (Also, DJ doesn't have to endure the spectacle of a tremendous loss for the home team. I would just hate that, you know?)

What up. Sorry for the absence--got kinda sickly there, and actual real life intervened. Plus that dadgum worm kept wriggling. Good news, though!
I get to see DJ next month! I will board one of our nation's wonderful airborne people-movers and jet away to his geographical location! This makes me want to sing the "Happy Happy Joy Joy Song". I will spare you and sing it quietly to myself.
Also, a special shout-out to the Ghirardelli-free (still don't know how you managed that one) Lipstick Librarian, children's book editor/candy lover/mad genius sharyn november, and the recently-relocated and differently-employed and always-fabulous indierocklibrarian ! These ladies have been great--some exploring my silly blog, some linking to me, and I am getting to know them a little too! Fantastic--this is one of the reasons I started this pathetic mess in the first place! :P
Meanwhile, over in Libraryland, still lookin', no job yet...courage! More pix and linx soon I promise honest I swear! Till that blessed time, enjoy this ....an oldie but a goodie...

Step right up, folks...
08.05.03 (2:30 pm) [edit]
Howdy! A few housekeeping issues first:
Links are coming along swimmingly; will be finishing up in the next day or two (until you folks send me your favorites, which I will then add!). Soon I will be able to group 'em into chunks for ya, so as to create harmony and loveliness in your perusal of fling fling!
In the process of upgrading to tBlog Pro so's I can put more images on here, and generally exercise the megafreak control over this little project that I am accustomed to in all other walks of my life. Meanwhile, I hope you are satisfied with the occasional annoying emoticon:  :x
I also plan to deck fling fling! out in fancy-schmancy HTML before long, to further increase your stomach butterflies as you fall more and more in love with this, my obsession du jour. See, my blawg ain't as purty as all dem udder blawgs. Ah means t'rectify dat ASAP.
And hey! Besides the ALA website, you can also go here for all your USA PATRIOT Act update needs. One of these days I plan to do an extended-style rant on said Act which will probably land me in FBI custody. If you're reading this, Mr. Ashcroft, I love your hair. Really.
Later, an even MORE extendo-style jiggy wit' it rantathon on CIPA. Heh.

Quiz time!
08.05.03 (1:40 am) [edit]
As promised! Okay, not really a quiz, but hopefully not as lame as those college dorm "icebreakers" the Floor Advisors always put together that made you wanna bail on the "free pizza!" party in the lounge...
I thought we could all get to know each other a bit more! Hee hee!
Yes, I love to torture the unsuspecting. You've probably gotten this in your emails over the last few years, and here it is again in all its glory! The get-to-know-me quiz! I'll go first. You can leave me your answers in the comment section, if you are so inclined! Also, please pardon the lazy capitalization; I just copied it here from email and am too lazy to correct it.
1. LIVING ARRANGEMENT? strange mix of comforting homey vibe wif mumsy and total freakout madness of being home wif mumsy as I look for work 2. WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING AT THE MOMENT? um there's about six children's books on my nightstand, plus about 4 young adult books, and for adult fare, I'm re-reading Stephen Ambrose's fantastic Lewis and Clark survey examination, Bee Season by Myla Goldberg, and Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut. Three favorites, all put me in the frame of mind of unbridled creativity and the gifts we get from that. 3. WHAT'S ON YOUR MOUSE PAD? VanGogh's "Irises" and a coffee stain 4. FAVORITE BOARD GAME? well, it used to be Scrabble. but I can't remember when I had time to play a nice game. I like Cranium a lot. 5. FAVORITE MAGAZINE? of late, home decorating and life organization/simplifying and cooking magazines catch my eye. I used to devour tons of indie-style DIY 'zines, still have a lot of 'em around here. I am forced to read librarianship professional publications and trade magazines till I wanna hurl (part of the reason I probably won't be getting my PhD; much as I like reading about this profession, I just couldn't do it 24/7). When I was a kid, I couldn't get enough "Reader's Digest". It changes all the time. 6. FAVORITE SMELLS? spring rains, popcorn, coffee, sheets dried outdoors, sharpies, liquid paper 6b. LEAST FAVORITE SMELLS? cabbage, what it smells like when you pass a dairy farm on the highway, polo and obsession colognes for men (thanks a lot, Eric) 7. FAVORITE SOUND? the squeak of the mailbox never gets old 8. WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD? paper cuts. hands down. it's all emotional and angry-making. 9. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU WAKE? "Oh HOLY--, I'm LATE!!!!!!!!!! Oh. I'm not in grad school anymore. Later, peeps!!!zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzz" 10. FAVORITE COLOR? the colors on this blog; pale vintage shades of pink and green; yellow and blue are happy together; red anything 11. HOW MANY RINGS BEFORE YOU ANSWER THE PHONE? two if I'm feeling spry, four if not 12. FUTURE CHILD'S NAME? I always thought Hannah, Emma, Claire, and Olivia were fantastic names for girls. I always liked Emerson, Truman, Jake, Gibson, and Elliott for boys. I had a "back-to- my-roots" phase where I wanted to name my kids Maire and Fachtna and Siobhan and Seamus, but I think I'm over that now. Currently, my favorites are Poppy and Sam. 13. WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IN LIFE? I'll quote DJ: God, family, friends, caffeine 14. FAVORITE FOODS? I can't seem to get enough Edy's whole fruit sorbet. it's naturally fat free but I like it cuz it tastes yummy. I like Terra chips and Bissinger's chocolate molasses puffs. I like oranges and baby peas. but not together. I like to drink milk. a lot. 15. CHOCOLATE OR VANILLA? yes, please. 16. DO YOU LIKE TO DRIVE FAST? I like the thought of me driving fast. but I'm just not talented enough. I have a visual perspective problem that precludes me driving fast. I like to feel my body going fast. there. 17. DO YOU SLEEP WITH A STUFFED ANIMAL? yes. sometimes a few. a mouse, a rabbit, an eeyore, and a teddy. I'm 34, by the way. 18. STORMS - COOL OR SCARY? the other day one was making me nervous, but they're awesome. love 'em. there's another one going on right now. should I still be on this computer? 19. WHAT TYPE WAS YOUR FIRST CAR? let's not go there. 21. FAVORITE ALCOHOLIC DRINK? fat tire, guinness, murphy's, shiner bock, boulevard wheat, sunshine unfiltered wheat, and different pale ales in the brewery world. the hard stuff: if I can have a drink of bushmill's or green stripe every now and again, I'm a happy girl. | Sulky, we hardly knew ye |
08.04.03 (10:26 pm) [edit]
So I'm still a-linkin' away over there on the lefthand sidebar for your surfing pleasure, and DJ might get to go surfing (for actual real! with water and everything!) tomorrow, and my sister Angela is playing nurse to her mother- and sister-in-law, and our mom is happily ensconced in her comfy chair, watching Dominick Dunne (upon whom she has a major crush). All is, if not well with the world, at least of the usual status quo. And I'm thinking I should probably letcha know a little more about me and why this blog even exists. :?
Of course, if you are within the sacred "Circle of Trust" already (which amusing phrase we take from Meet the Parents), you may go look at squirrels or something until I'm done here. If you just don't care, I understand. You too are excused.
But if you truly are, for whatever reason, curious about what's goin' on in my quadrant, I will extemporize for you now. First off, I'm tryin' to become a Youth Librarian in one of our nation's public libraries. I looked really hard for such a position while I was in skool, but no dice. Either the libraries could not wait until I graduated, or they wanted someone with more experience, which I completely understand. (One of these days I'll get my resume link up here for ya.) I spent tons of time and $ in skool on professional development (workshops and conferences and suchlike), networking, just generally trying to make contacts in Libraryland. It was well worth it even though it did not land me a job. I learned tons of stuff I could never have learned in class (sorry, Dr. Adkins!).
In class, I tried to focus my work almost exclusively on Youth Services, even in the general courses. I have experience in both public and academic libraries (I worked in the MU Engineering and Law Libraries, as well as my undergrad library for three years), and I love adult reference and reader's advisory, but my heart is with tha shorties.
So that's it. I just turned 34, don't have two nickels to rub together, am desperately hunting my first professional position, and now I'm blogging. Yes! I have achieved an even higher level of dorkdom!! Aren't you proud? Me too. Not to get all political on ya, but if this pesky economy doesn't take a turnaround pretty soon, those of us (some of my liberry skool friends included!) hunting work in places funded by government dollars are just outta luck for the time being. That's how public libraries work, but that's for another entry. Basically, there's been so much budget and staff slashing in the last couple of years in Libraryland that the whole thing looks like a dang horror movie.
But oh yeah--why this blog?? Well, to pass the time, obviously, but also so I can have a little web portal for myself. And I'd like to meet other library-type bloggers, since I enjoy their blogs so much. There's no great mystery to it. :P
Later, we're gonna have a quiz here at fling fling! Getchyer thinkin' caps on! Don't worry, it's a fun-type quiz, I promise.
Ooh, check it out! Everyone's favorite library comic strip, "Overdue", just had a contest for a new name. Now it's called "Unshelved "!
By the way, if you too have a library-style-type blog or website and wish to link to me or wish me to link to you, just leave me a message here and I will be glad to do so! Happy bloggin', peeps!

Whew! All blogged out!
08.03.03 (8:03 pm) [edit]
[image]Sulkbrarian_132362 6611.jpg[/image] For now, at least! My favorite librarian-blogger writes to me that I should look out because blogging is very addictive. I can attest to that tonight! I've been here for ages having a linkathon! :P
Next up for more linkydinks will be: library jobhunting sites, author/illustrator/fun for da shorties sites (we love the shorties here at fling fling!), and favorite music sites.
Till then, I remain as ever, Your Sulkbrarian.

08.03.03 (1:54 pm) [edit]
Today's links (or, if you are clumsy on the keyboard, "loinks") are all about Libraryland. I'm going to try and see if some of the fine folks I link to might want to link to me. How's that for fair dealing??
Today's mood: pensive; apprehensive. Possibly to do with the thunderstorm. Storms usually assuage me and soothe me. Today, not so much. Today's music: The Clientele, "Suburban Light". A classic which has seen me through other pensive, apprehensive-type days. Today's wardrobe: stripey aqua t-shirt, faded green cargos, bunny slippers. Ah, the joys of not being gainfully employed. Today's culinary choices: Coffee (always, always), plenty of Speshul K cereal goodness, and perhaps later, a kickass salad. Not very imaginative. It fills up, though.

The people in my neighborhood
08.02.03 (10:23 pm) [edit]
The people in my neighborhood aren't nearly as important to me as my real actual friends. Unfortunately, my friends do not live in my neighborhood, nor would I want them to, as it is quite dull here. (Hence, this blog.)
But since I will be referring to my friends from time to time, I thought I should give a wee bit of backstory on each of them:
DJ is my wonderful boyfriend. He is Something Else. He is an incredibly talented writer, a fantastic friend, dashingly handsome, unbelievably devious in a sweet way, more brilliant than ten thousand suns, and utterly, gut-bustingly funny. (Pay up, DJ.) Some of the things you will see on this blog either come directly from him, or were inspired by him. He is my Lego. Click! Micaela is my lovely friend from liberry skool. She is going to be a Youth Librarian too. She is married to R. and they have just bought a house!! We enjoy mutual obsessions with nummy things to eat, girly makeup, internet fun, and HGTV. I adore her!
Beth is my equally lovely friend (if they went to liberry skool with me they are all equally lovely so that is a given) who is going to Honduras to be a school librarian! She is curious and involved and conscientious and all sorts of fun. I will miss her!
Sarah, another equally lovely friend, is going to be a school librarian too! She is married to W. and they are going to have a baby!! She is very excited. I miss her very very much! She makes me laugh and kept me sane in Digital Media class!
Connie is equally lovely and is a very caring, empathetic friend who has much to give. She gives wonderful advice and is a great sounding board. She is the person you go to when you want the clearest available perspective on a thing, and she is as smart as they come! She is going to go into liberry management and continue to kick ass wherever she goes! I deeply miss hanging out with her...
Amanda is equally lovely and will make an awesome Youth Librarian too! She is quirky and funny and great to listen to and learn from. I miss her too--heck, I miss 'em all!
There are other friends who may or may not be making appearances here. If they do, I will introduce them too! :D

DJ and I are obsessed with squirrels. We cannot seem to get enough of the little freaks, thus I have included several squirrely links for you to peruse. I must warn you that they are jaw-droppingly hysterical. Please go to them now--you will thank me later...

A word about linkage
08.02.03 (6:03 pm) [edit]
|
What makes a blog fun? Linkage!! I'm really geeked that tBLOG lets me have this much customization for free, and I'm really looking forward to the time I can categorize my linkage into topics (information professional that I now am!), so meanwhile, I'm just gonna try to add links in as orderly a fashion as possible, grouping them into topics as best I can. Capiche? Great. Knock yerselves out. :P

Afternoon, folks...
08.02.03 (11:37 am) [edit]
Well well. Here it is early afternoon and I'm still tryin' to chug enough coffee to keep my eyelids from sticking shut...
I guess you will be wanting to know who the devil I am, eh? Now that you've tuned into my personal region here, you're desperately curious, aren't you? Can't say as I blame you, myself. I am just that terribly interesting.
Anyway, I was born a poor white girl in Chicago lo, these many moons ago. After several false starts and misfires (previous career goals included: astronaut, novelist, stand-up comic, film director, indie-rock label owner, and pirate radio goddess), I hauled my booty to grad skool a couple of years ago and badabing, I'm a Youth Services Librarian. Where do I work? That is as yet to be determined. I'm in the middle of a tiring, seemingly endless job search that is sort of invigorating in some ways but generally sucks the life out of me on a daily basis. There ya go, kids! That's me! Heeyuk! If you MUST know more, check out my profile.
For now, I spend time monkeying with my monkey, DJ (sigh--that's him in his monkeysuit --isn't he dreamy??), and monkeying around with this new distraction. Yay, me. [image]Sulkbrarian_105314 3671.jpg[/image]

Why is she sulky, again?
08.02.03 (12:34 am) [edit]
|
[image]j0198610.wmf[/image]Oh, she's not really sulky. She just decided, one fine day, to combine the title of her favorite Elvis Costello song ("Sulky Girl") with her occupation (librarian). Hence, her speshul name. A speshul name for a speshul gurl. Her other nicknames include: Monkeyprincess, Helmetlady, My Lego, and Ol' Crazy Myra. Erm. Yes. So. Why the hell am I writing in the third person?
