Ben Lee is playing...where?!
10.31.03 (12:20 am) [edit]
Uh, okay. So...now, I'm not sure what site I was on that gave me a pop-up ad about Ben Lee (whom we enjoy very much, from his days as a mere toddler in Noise Addict ), but this might be one of the stranger things I've read this week. Apparently the aging Mr. Lee will be playing...the New York City Bloomingdale's, Sports Department (on 2), very, very soon. Great! I can shop for pedometers AND get my indie on, all at the same time! Bwahahahaaaaaaa!
Seriously. How'd he get roped into this one? C'mon, Ben, we thought you were all DIY and so forth. What's up with playing a frickin' department store, buddy?
For some reason I'm not as ok with Ben here hanging out near the volleyball section as I am with the Pixies reforming to ostensibly make a buck. Contradictory!!!
Just wonderin' what the hell's goin' on, as per usual. xoxo Sulky

Oh my golly!
10.29.03 (6:13 pm) [edit]
This is not a joke.
You know, I used to make jokes about it. Somebody would say to me, "Hey, Sulky, when ya gonna cut yer hair?" or something equally insipid, and I would snort derisively (for is there any other way to snort?), "When the Pixies reform."
Well, shut mah mouth and grab the scissors, 'cuz guess what, kids.
And I don't care why. If it's just for cash, that's fine. They can have mine. We all enjoy their post-breakup efforts immensely. But if that's not paying the electric bills, that's cool. I'll fork it over. Because I figure the worst Pixies show would have to be a skillion times better than the best Linkin Park show. Know what I'm sayin'?
I read about it on someone else's blog recently and didn't really believe it. I don't know why I didn't. I guess because it's one of those things you wish for but don't believe will ever really happen.
But it appears to be absolutely true. Something kept nagging me about it, so like a good little information professional, I checked my sources (and even though I know you shouldn't believe everything you read, I believe this):
"...In a sense, the idea of a Pixies reunion has almost become a joke, the indie-kid version of "Yeah, when pigs fly." So when the report came in July that all four original members (that's Black Francis, Kim Deal, David Lovering, and Joey Santiago) have been secretly practicing together every couple of blue moons since the breakup, there was the first glimmer of hope.
Now that the heavyhandedness is past, here comes the point. The glimmer is now a full-blown supernova. It's happening. In April. No dates yet, not even any quotes from the group's principals-- just a band spokesperson's promise to MTV, who broke the story. The source, who remains unnamed in MTV's story, also claims that if all goes well a studio album will follow.
The Pixies. Are back. Together. Music is saved. Lovers of rock, unite and cheer. This is going to truly own." --Pitchfork Media
I can't really describe to you, dear readers, my all-encompassing, wholehearted love for the Pixies. I guess it would be akin to my wholehearted love for...what, exactly? (I'm lookin' at you, DJ.) I can't tell you the rough times they've helped me through. Or the times they've elevated regular happy fun times to a whole new level of insanity. Or the times that...okay, I'm regressing. Regressing AND gushing, worse yet. Stop it, Sulky. You're 34.
But I just can't help it. And I will not ask for forgiveness.
[image]Sulkbrarian_163281 736.gif[/image]
I guess the best Pixies story I have, from the three concerts I attended, is helping Black Francis understand why it was a good idea to dust his latte with chocolate during my one and only encounter with the band. We were sitting at the counter in a wee tiny hole-in-the-wall espresso place next to the Blue Note, pre-show on the Trompe Le Monde tour, and I was conducting an informal interview for my radio station. He didn't understand why anyone would pour anything on their coffee and began to get irate and belligerent. I insisted he try this new approach to his coffee consumption. He very reluctantly did so, and well, he liked it, hey Mikey. Meanwhile, Joey was attempting to sleep at a table while simultaneously answering my schoolgirl-crush questions, and David was making silly faces at passersby (who, once they figured out the damn Pixies were in the house, crowded in by the truckloads, rendering my interview nearly useless), and Mrs. John Murphy (that's Kim Deal to you) was smiling that megawatt smile and tickling (yes, tickling) my chin with some ridiculous pink feather-pen she'd borrowed from the proprietor. Actually, that's not much of a story, I now realize. But I was in a tiny room for a few minutes surrounded by one of the greatest rock bands in history, so it's good enough for me. :)
See you in the pit. :P xoxo Sulky
"It was just like--it was so hush-hush. They were so... quiet about it. And then the next thing you know..." --"I'm Amazed"

I'm calling a house meeting
10.28.03 (2:40 pm) [edit]
Welcome once more to my underground lair. A special shout-out to all the new folks who have found my blog in the last couple of weeks! I'm very glad you're here and hope I may serve as some form of entertainment to you--Lord knows I entertain myself by writing these silly things!
What does Sulky want for Christmas, you ask? Why, only everything.
[image]Sulkbrarian_133760 8478.gif[/image]
Also thought I should point you toward my archives, over there on the lefthand sidebar somewhere. It's the best place to go if you are for some strange reason curious about me and what makes me tick. I started this blog in August, to amuse myself whilst conducting endless online job hunts, and to hopefully meet other librarian-type bloggers (which reasons are coming to fruition splendidly). One of these days, when I actually get my first professional position, I will have lots more library-styley things to blog about. I have lots of stories from liberry skool, yes, and stories from the four libraries I've worked at, but.....all in good time. I just feel kinda strange right now and terribly out of place, sort of on the outside looking in. Difficult sometimes to keep the spirits up. You know? I'm all MLS'ed up here, rarin' to go, and........pffft. Nothing. Dadgum economy.
Anyway, about some of the fantastic library blogs I've been reading recently. You folks rock. And I'm going to have permalinks to you over there <---- soon, but not until we tBloggers have the ability to better organize and group our linkage. I'm hoping we will get to make folders. :) Meanwhile, do check out my smallish library blog linkage section to your left. Beginning with Librarian gone wild! and ending with Librarism.com. Thanks to you folks for coming to visit me as well, you crazy kids, you! I will expand that section over there ASAP...> ...But for right now, I will list temporary links here (and when you visit, check out THEIR links--there's tons more great library blogs out there, and there's just as many non-library-themed yet equally fun links on many of these blogs!):

Oh, you wacky kids!
10.23.03 (12:23 am) [edit]
Kids. Yep, I love 'em. Can't have 'em myself, but I adore the little buggers. Good thing, if I plan to work with 'em alla time. (Boy, how swift am I!)
Now, on my recent NW trip, not that DJ and I have not been subject to witness such behavior separately, we seemed to be privy to inordinately elevated instances of what we can only term: spastic child syndrome. (If you're rabidly PC and the use of the term "spastic" offends you--first of all, how come you're at my blog? Go he re instead. Secondly, don't be offended. It's the only appropriate term for what these shorties were up to.) Also, I thought it would be a great name for a label: Spastic Kids Records. Whatcha think?
Ex. A: Driving in Ballard. Simultaneously, DJ and I observe a towheaded moppet of 10 or so, bespectacled and cute as the dickens, run out of a shop, stand stock-still on a streetcorner waiting for the light to change, and after a few moments, he lost his shit. Stop, stand, wait, freak!!! The child commenced to completely spaz out in a way that cannot be described. By. Himself. Just. Spazzing. Arms a-flailin', legs a-twitchin', dancing his elfin jig. It was like he had kept all this energy pent-up all day, shopping with his Mom, and just couldn't take it anymore and had to cut loose! We should have been wearing Depends, we laughed so hard and so long. To that kid: Go on, brother, let your freak flag fly. We're behind you. Care not what passersby think.
Ex. B: Driving in Olympia. Same simultaneous observation. This time, a young girl. Running and screaming "ArAAAARarAAAAAAAARarAAAA AAAAARarrrr" at the top of her wee lungs, away from her adult guardian person. Arms windmilling. Head tilted toward the sky, oblivious of any obstacles in her path, nor the onrushing busy intersection. It was awesome. We screamed along with her, for good measure, for some blocks. Ex. C: Whidbey Island food break. Godfather's Pizza. Prepubescent boy screaming "Pizzaaaaaaaaa!!! I want to be the one to open the dooooorrrrrrr!!!" and skipping out of rhythm on his way out of the store with his family. DJ and I exchange knowing looks and nod silently: we are once more blessed by irrepressive young people.
When I got back, the family and I went to a fabulous art fair in Kansas City. Check out what I witnessed in the kiddie play area: [image]Sulkbrarian_130691 4701.jpg[/image] This is Ex. D, and my DJ missed it, I'm sorry to report. This kid's parents looked just how you might expect them to look. He behaved just how you might expect him to behave. It kicked major ass. But what of that turtle, I ask? I don't see a damn thing funny or cute or friendly or inviting about that character. He disturbs me, in fact...
Ex. E, also sans my DJ: The Target store in St. Peters, MO. I have to pee. I go into the ladies' room. (Way to go, Sulky.) I encounter: a woman with a shopping cart inside the actual restroom, a girl-child, a mere tot, in the basket, and.....a partially-clothed little boy in the first stall, half-sitting on the toilet with his shirt over his head. The reason I know this is that his stall door was wiiiiide open. The following exchange, while not verbatim, is damned close:
Harried Young Mother: Lily, sit down, Lily, sit down, sit DOWN, Lily! Simon! Hurry up, sweetie, we have to pick your sister up from the soccer game! We have to be there in five minutes! What are you doing, Simon?
Simon (for that was the boy-child's name): I’m going, mommy, I swear. (The child is apparently disrobing at this time; I have taken the stall next to him)
HYM: Okay, sweetie, do you need any help? Because we have to--why don’t you close the door. Honey, Simon, what are you doing? No. NO. You don’t have to--wait! Why are you taking your clothes off??!? You don’t have to do that to go to the bathroom, sweetie! Honey, put your shoes back on. Why did you take off your shoes??!? Oh, put those back on. Why are they off?
Simon (loudly, exasperated): BECAUSE THAT’S HOW THEY SHOWED US IN THE BOY SCOUTS! (he’s, roughly, four)
(at this point, other people are coming in and giggling while the HYM scrambles to explain her naked child and Lily is carrying on in the cart; I am biting my fist to keep from howling with laughter...look down and see these bare feet dancing and kicking next to me)
HYM: Oh, Simon! Really! Come on now, get dressed. Have you gone yet? Hey! (the kid is singing some kind of song to himself; unintelligible except for the chorus, which goes: "poo, poo, pooooooooooo!!!")
HYM: HAVE YOU GONE YET!!! Let me see, Simon, move...oh good, now let's flush...(she enters his open stall)
Simon (obviously enraged; could not have been louder, echoed something fierce): IT'S MY POO AND I'LL DO WHAT I WANT WITH IT!!! (dead silence whilst entire restroom ponders the veracity of this declaration; broken by roomful of laughter)
HYM (strangling on laughter): Ye-y-yeeees, true, but honey, please! We are LATE! (I am frantically finishing up so I can get outside my stall and witness the denouement; there is some rustling and flushing to my right and I am about to open my door when...)
HYM: Okay. Good. Now wash your hands, sweetie.
Simon: YAAAAAGHRRGHRAAAHHH!!! (pitter-patter of boy-feet; runs out of his stall, full-tilt boogie, and straight into a porcelain sink with his head; loud crack and subsequent sickening thud as child falls to floor, HYM screeches, a moment of quiet, then...)
Simon (somewhat slurred): ...Pretty... (I can see the birds tweeting and stars flying around his head as I finally exit my stall; HYM scrambling to help him up, clearly far more traumatized than he...by now I am just laughing outright helplessly which makes me feel bad so I stop till they leave)
HYM (in parting; under her breath to no one in particular, having finally corralled her son): I need a drink...........
Yep. Kids. I love 'em. :D xoxo Sulky

Peter Pan with a baseball bat
10.22.03 (12:08 pm) [edit]
So after Sulky was a college DJ, she went out into the world to DJ for money. She had a great time doing that too, until music formats and management and staffing styles radically changed, all over the country. Which is why she got out of radio--it wasn't fun anymore. There was, suddenly, almost overnight, no more autonomy; nor memory nor respect for either previous broadcasting methods or music history. It just wasn't worth it anymore.
But while Sulky was a DJ, right in the last gasp of the early to mid-nineties, a band called Heatmiser came along and shook things up real good. They were brash and loud and melodic and clever and put on a great live show. They first recorded for the integrity-laden Frontier Records, then for that OTHER godhead Olympia, WA indie label, Kill Rock Stars (Huggybear, Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Heavens to Betsy, Sleater-Kinney, and a host of new and old underground superstar artists--they really churn 'em out at KRS). In my opinion, not that they weren't a great band, but the most special thing about Heatmiser was Elliott Smith. It was his voice and his lyrics that continued to keep me interested, and what a fantastic solo career.
Well, in even more sad musical news (see my post below for details), he died today at age 34. He was my age. I enjoyed his musical progress immensely and consider him absolutely original, and am sad to see him go.
[image]Sulkbrarian_739370 232.jpg[/image]
I'm borrowing this link from Cissie so you can read more...Cissie has a great post about him today. What a shame, what a waste...

Sulky's Grab Bag!
10.20.03 (7:15 pm) [edit]
Hey, Carlos, thanks for the link, buddy! Everyone go check out my fellow librarian's blog. :)
Announcing: NEW HEADER SOON! FOR REAL THIS TIME! (I had to enlist outside assistance, which makes me feel like a tool, seein' as how I gotz tha mad skillz an' all, but I also gotz the WRONG FLIPPIN' SOFTWARE for the job.) Check back soon for the grand unveiling--gracias, George! Now for the main part of this entry:
A tasty assortment of goodies for my readers. Just don't stick your hand in the grab bag without asking Mom first, and certainly don't put any of this in your mouth before you have it x-rayed at the police station (you never know).
Speaking of which, it's about that time: [image]Sulkbrarian_482849 737.jpg[/image] 'Li'l too much Night Train there, eh, chief? Eeeww, nasty. Okay, I'm gonna bring the room down for a minute; it's Bad Storytime. Back in the day, when Sulky was a superstar bigtime radio DJ, she played the holy hell out of this gentleman's band, Beat Happening, on her fabulous girly radio show. She was lucky enough to get to see said band and interview said gentleman on said show. She has always held a speshul place in her heart for these folks, and got really torqued up on her recent Northwest excursion because she and her A-1 travel guide, DJ, passed through Olympia, home to said folks and their incredible label, K Records. Ate a delicious lunch at the fantastic&mellow&good 4th Avenue Tavern, drank some delicious NW microbrews, and basically kept looking around for my local heroes to walk by, like a big ole groupie. Why is this Bad Storytime? Because the gentleman and one of his other bands, Dub Narcotic Sound System, were recently in a car crash. I have SJ to thank for alerting me. If you are a fan and would like to help, here is the info. Anyway, I will just share my favorite Beat Happening song, "Indian Summer", from their landmark 1988 masterpiece, Jamboree. Get well, everybody:
[image]Sulkbrarian_698676 68.gif[/image]
Breakfast in cemetery Boy tastin' wild cherry Touch girl, apple blossom Just a boy playin' possum We'll come back for Indian Summer We'll come back for Indian Summer We'll come back for Indian Summer And go our separate ways What is that cheerful sound? Rain fallin' on the ground We'll wear a jolly crown Buckle up, we're wayward bound We'll come back for Indian Summer We'll come back for Indian Summer We'll come back for Indian Summer And go our separate ways Motorbike to cemetery Picnic on wild berries French toast with molasses Croquet and Baked Alaskas We'll come back for Indian Summer We'll come back for Indian Summer We'll come back for Indian Summer And go our separate ways Cover me with rain Walk me down the lane I'll drink from your drain We will never change No matter what they say
Onward. On Saturday, Sweetest Day, my DJ attended the wedding of two of his best friends, Jay and Amber, whom I had the privilege to meet while I was out there. It was a lovely fall-themed wedding, by accounts, lovely weather, a great time had by all. DJ described his choice of suit to me--a sharp sartorial choice if ever there was one. He must have looked yummy, sitting around with the other well-suited menfolk, just looking for trouble! Anyway. The happy couple are in Mexico by now, and while Amber is apologetic for taking DJ's best drinking buddy away, good times will always be had by this lot. Adorable folks; looking forward to seeing them in February!
Oh, so did I tell you? I am going to the PLA conference in February, and will get to see my DJ, of course! We do hope that by then I actually live in Seattle, and will not have to shell out for airfare.
In other news, am still losing weight, still eating well and exercising, am now in a better mood overall, still jobhunting, trying to go to a little librarianship seminar next month, might be going to see my sister soon, planted some mums and decorated with fallish things, taking pictures of the beautiful orange and red trees, and there's a strange new gang of squirrels in my yard, making a helluva mess and gorging themselves on everything they see. Ah, autumn's beauty! It is to weep! :?
More soon, xoxo Sulky

...that I still lived in my college town. ...that I was still in graduate school. (did I just say that?) ...that I was still happy being a DJ. ...that I could go back to the time I was happiest being a DJ. ...that I had my own record label (why do I still wish this?). ...that someone would hire me so I wouldn't have to reminisce about being a DJ. ...that I had never let myself get so far out of shape. ...that I had never fallen out of touch with some of my friends. ...that I was tall. ...that my mother wasn't as old as she is. ...that my sister wasn't as old as she is. ...that I was older and wiser. ...that I knew what to do when uncertainty hits about someone you love. ...that I had children. ...that more people took me seriously. ...that more people understood me. ...that I didn't live so far away from most of the people I love. ...that I had lots of dogs and cats. ...that I could keep a better perspective in times of trouble. ...that I knew more about math. ...that I had gotten more and different things done sooner in my life. ...that I didn't need glasses. ...that other people were as honest with me as I am with them. ...that I wasn't so sensitive and didn't feel hurt so much by small slights. ...that I had a vegetable garden again. ...that I could buy all the books and music I want. ...that I could whistle. ...that I could swim. ...that my arms and legs were longer. ...that we didn't have to live in such a messed-up world. ...that newscasters would just quit their jobs and shut the hell up already. ...that I could properly express how I feel right now to the person who needs to hear it the most so I didn't have to blog silly stuff like this to cheer myself up. :P

I feel so good
10.13.03 (3:50 pm) [edit]
I am feeling absolutely energized, readers!
Sulky has taken to long, heart-rate-raising walks every day in order to augment her new eating plan, and is hopefully going to get to do some weight-training to rebuild ignored muscles soon! I am back from my second long walk of the day and man, this is awesome. Endorphins a-floodin' my brain, electrolytes a-floodin' my muscles (or whatever that stuff is)! Gorgeous, gorgeous day, kids, dogs, cats, trees, the smell of barbecue, wait dammit, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! ! haha
Actually I was able to walk by the dude down the street firing up his Weber because I still am not having cravings. I am really stoked about this (gee, can you tell??)! Just mad at myself for letting myself go for so long, is all. What could I have been thinking? Did I just resign myself to being fat, or...I don't understand the logic. Who the hell knows...well, it's over now, and that's what counts. :)
Just thought I'd throw that in there. :D Have a great one! xoxo Sulky

Ohhh, Quentin.
10.11.03 (2:28 pm) [edit]
I've never discussed my long-standing and uncontrollable love for Quentin Tarantino here, have I? I'm not sure there's room. Anyway. I so so so want to grow up to be the Bride. :P Thanks, Quentin, my brotha. I lost twenty pounds just watching "Kill Bill". He's got my back, at least........
Okay, here we go with some more NW pix. Some others I'm not ready to share yet did turn out really great, but I need to do justice by them because my zoom wasn't working, and I must edit tiny things out like the edge of a railing, or a car side mirror, etc. My pix would have rocked all space and time had my zoom been working....:( But meanwhile, here's some of the more noteworthy nature shots:
Trees. [image]Sulkbrarian_915465 157.jpg[/image]
Yet more trees. [image]Sulkbrarian_566149 55.jpg[/image]
Idyllic gorgeous random stream. [image]Sulkbrarian_527531 01.jpg[/image]
Idyllic gorgeous random lake. [image]Sulkbrarian_121231 1047.jpg[/image]
I believe the same lake, only from on high. One of my favorite photos. [image]Sulkbrarian_117814 945.jpg[/image]
Beautiful beach stones and pebbles, far too many to carry home in pockets. [image]Sulkbrarian_769611 048.jpg[/image]
View from Whidbey Island of Deception Pass Bridge. [image]Sulkbrarian_916583 157.jpg[/image]
A ferry just below, I believe, Fort Casey. [image]Sulkbrarian_854514 011.jpg[/image]
From a dock at Gig Harbor, WA. Isn't it cute? [image]Sulkbrarian_888110 372.jpg[/image]
Snoqualmie Falls. Should be renamed "Trippyfreakout Falls" because of this unreal visual trick your eyes play when you look at 'em a certain way (My DJ showed me.) He says I need to see them when they're really hauling ass; this was apparently just above a trickle. It's a truly lovely place, regardless! [image]Sulkbrarian_117657 3656.jpg[/image]
Whidbey Island, again. I think this was my favorite day. [image]Sulkbrarian_100389 9511.jpg[/image]
The word "panorama" comes to mind. [image]Sulkbrarian_585743 456.jpg[/image]
Our final epic journey to points serendipitous--DJ was angered at the weather gods because he couldn't show me Mount Rainier on a clear day. So these photos don't show the upper several thousand feet of the mountain. But I don't care--I will see it again. :) I think the clouds are fantastic, as it turns out, and you can see bits of the glaciers that DJ was trying to show me, bless the boy, and that would have been great to see, but it's pretty damn majestic this way too. Now do you see why I want to live there? I have to have this in my life: [image]Sulkbrarian_128465 2867.jpg[/image] [image]Sulkbrarian_137935 3132.jpg[/image] [image]Sulkbrarian_659836 877.jpg[/image] [image]Sulkbrarian_134943 1936.jpg[/image]
Finally, one of my favorite shots and I don't recall where I took it but that's okay: [image]Sulkbrarian_108892 3111.jpg[/image] Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Happy. Pretties. So many, many pretties. :) xoxo Sulky

Lyrics to die for
10.09.03 (9:58 pm) [edit]
So I'm a tool. I never let my Pete Yorn "musicforthemorningafter" CD play long enough to discover the hidden track before tonight. I'm virtual shopping with Miss Micaela and Pete's just singin' away to me, just like we did in grad skool, when suddenly this incredible yet simple song comes on. I about peed myself! Nice soft song, acoustic guitar, just perfect. Here's the lyrics (Hey, anyone have his new album yet? Any good? I think he's the bee's knees, and I bet it will be great!):
A Girl Like You
Someday I'll look into her green eyes And know that she'll come with me A girl like you
Too many Things I do not care for But one thing that I adore Is a girl like you
I'll always try To look you in the eye It's okay With a girl like you
Tomorrow I think I'll tell you something The thing that I haven't said To a girl like you
And even if I don't know what the day will bring Still I can tell most anything To a girl like you
I'll always try To look you in the eye It's okay With a girl like you It's okay With a girl like you A girl like you

Photojournal #2: My DJ
10.08.03 (6:56 pm) [edit]
Hey, everbuddy. Have you met my pie?
In Sulky news, no job yet, finding it hard to keep up with the latest doin's in Libraryland because it's frankly getting depressing to read about all the cool stuff going on that I'm not a part of right now, still pining away over having to leave the Northwest, just went on a diet and exercise plan so's I can get in shape and not die, and so's I can better keep up with my boyfriend when we go scampering. I did a pretty good job holding my own on this trip, but...I want to do more hardcore scampering, and right now I'm not in very good shape. So please: nobody send me any holiday cookies, okay? Thanks and wish me luck!
Before I get into the main subject of today's photojournal, let me share what I saw on TV the other day, won't you? I mention it only because of the barbaric nature of the show. It was a craft show. And, well, my hope is that they were assembling sock monkeys, but to my eye, it certainly bears a strong resemblance to dismemberment. This crap was on in the daytime, too, when children and other impressionable viewers could see it! Hooligans:
[image]Sulkbrarian_111383 1765.jpg[/image] Terrible, isn't it? I weep...
Let's move on. :( This next bit will restore my smile. :D
For those readers still interested in my Seattle odyssey, and who haven't blown your lunch yet at my incessant ramblings about my DJ, this one's for you. And...I mean...I haven't even really gotten to the good parts yet! I haven't shared a LOT of gorgeous nature photos, told you about seeing my first pica, nor have I given a rundown of the Reverend Horton Heat show, nor given a report on how cool it was to meet DJ's friends. Let alone all the millions of little special moments that peppered the week...so we've a ways to go on this baby. Are ya game? 8) All right, then. Here we go! And DJ is a humble sort, so I certainly hope this doesn't embarrass him. Note: photos are not in chronological event sequence. Who cares.
The look on his face while eating something yummy... [image]Sulkbrarian_170166 350.jpg[/image]
...is quite similar to how he looks when he's asleep, waiting for the ferry. Pure enjoyment! [image]Sulkbrarian_450506 194.jpg[/image]
No, not crazy at all. Why do you ask? (Actually, "crazy doesn't even begin to cover it"!) [image]Sulkbrarian_497698 254.jpg[/image]
Morris and Mesha, the best dogs ever, helpfully cleaning up after DJ and me. Even they will tell you they rock! :) [image]Sulkbrarian_108737 4316.jpg[/image]
DJ enjoys his happy place. One of them, anyway! [image]Sulkbrarian_340079 417.jpg[/image]
Again with the happiness... [image]Sulkbrarian_103284 0671.jpg[/image]
On another beach, also very happy, and sorta insane in a cuddly way! [image]Sulkbrarian_909090 014.jpg[/image]
"I look like a GAP ad." No, just terribly suave, is all... [image]Sulkbrarian_677269 875.jpg[/image]
There's a big story that goes with this one, involving a devastating bungee-jump injury from ten years ago. I won't tell it here. Just enjoy the scenery...:) [image]Sulkbrarian_669927 089.jpg[/image]
I never know what's better-looking, the foreground or the background. :P DJ, if you ever want to use this one for a bookjacket author photo, be my guest! I think it's that good! [image]Sulkbrarian_793503 453.jpg[/image]
How can you not love someone whose motto is: "Never confuse having a career with having a life"? Apparently several former girlfriends and other sundry folk have tried to steal this sacred head accessory, in misguided attempts to throw it away for being too ratty. Me? I just wanted it for myself! [image]Sulkbrarian_458861 300.jpg[/image]
I shouldn't even say this. It's not exactly a secret, but...in Roslyn, WA, there is brewed an ale not sold in stores, not advertised anyplace. Just for the locals, and local establishments. You have to go there to get it. I have sampled said ale. It is to die for...sigh..........refreshing! [image]Sulkbrarian_925452 487.jpg[/image]
While the many thousands of microbrews of the Northwest are indeed refreshing, the coffee will put you to sleep, kids. No foolin'--see for yourselves! Here the subject gets cozy outside a Tully's...I also like that it was misting rain...haha! [image]Sulkbrarian_115801 328.jpg[/image]
...and here, the full-on nap in the beautiful sun ("we don't deserve this weather!!!"). Outside Caffe Fiore, Ballard, WA. Chairs so comfortable the boy nicknamed them "narcaloungers". Here, he demonstrates "narcalounging" as he clutches a triple mocha. That coffee is full of drugs, gotta be. [image]Sulkbrarian_259074 16.jpg[/image]
I leave you with that peaceful image....till next time! xoxo Sulky 8)

Photojournal: Scamper!!
10.04.03 (8:35 pm) [edit]
Here's DJ and I scampering randomly on my recent visit. Please be warned: the following electrostatic images are not actual size, and the subjects within mean no actual harm to other humans. :)
Where do you want to go today? (The lad had plans for me I could not have even imagined...and none of 'em were in those tourist brochures!) [image]Sulkbrarian_770044 213.jpg[/image]
All hail the Archie McPhee Librarian Action Figure! [image]Sulkbrarian_117919 83.jpg[/image]
Yummy McPhee store sensory overload... [image]Sulkbrarian_232554 09.jpg[/image]
Cindy's Dog Magic. We envisioned a Hogwart's-style Academy of Canine Sorcery or something. Turns out it's just a grooming joint. At least, that's their cover. [image]Sulkbrarian_964975 177.jpg[/image]
Afterward, DJ waits for a random dog we encountered to exhibit some kind of magical tendency. [image]Sulkbrarian_357867 269.jpg[/image]
Heh heh heh... The sign reads: "Warning: Hazardous Area", so of course my DJ is right at home! [image]Sulkbrarian_596693 446.jpg[/image]
My boy loves to run. Look at him! Happy! [image]Sulkbrarian_279807 112.jpg[/image]
Scamper!! [image]Sulkbrarian_912179 042.jpg[/image]
Morris always exhibits magical tendencies. He loves his daddy! All together now: awwwwwwwwwwwww!!! [image]Sulkbrarian_224763 299.jpg[/image]
Aaaarrr! The Piraat! [image]Sulkbrarian_111668 262.jpg[/image]
I was told to close my eyes on the road. When I opened them, I found myself in "Northern Exposure". Now that's what I call a bitchin' date, folks!! [image]Sulkbrarian_724654 097.jpg[/image]
"Hi, my name is Len Tukwila, and I'm a driftwood artist...first I sculpt it, then I buff it, then I polish it..." (For sale in The Brick, Roslyn, WA at a bargain price, kids!) [image]Sulkbrarian_784006 116.jpg[/image]
So DJ is really evil and twisted. Right before he drops me at the airport, he procures this unreal, incredible pizza (specifically, the house special from Olympia Pizza & Spaghetti House, at the top of Queen Anne Hill). We ate some on the way to Seatac... [image]Sulkbrarian_118897 9810.jpg[/image]
...and I saved the rest for the plane. Just as DJ warned, the intoxicating aroma made everyone drool and stare pathetically in my direction, so crazed with lust and envy were they over my happy drug-filled pizza pie. Still warm, too! [image]Sulkbrarian_537244 505.jpg[/image]
Scampering makes you sleepy. On the plane coming home, full of enchanted pizza, dreaming my scampering dreams...looking forward to our next adventure! :P [image]Sulkbrarian_121323 7901.jpg[/image]

[image]Sulkbrarian_111685 6871.jpg[/image]
You guys remember that Juliana Hatfield Three song?:
My sister My sister My sister
I hate my sister She’s such a bitch She acts as if she doesn’t even know that I exist But I would do anything to let her know I care But I am only talking to myself ’cause she isn’t there.
My sister
I love my sister She’s the best She’s cooler than any other girl that I have ever met She had the greatest band, she had the greatest guy She’s good at everything and doesn’t even try.
She’s got a wall around her nobody can climb She lets her ladder down for those who really shine I tried to scale it, but to me she’s blind So I lit a firecracker Went off in my eye.
I miss my sister Why’d she go ? She’s the one who would have taken me To my first all-ages show It was the Violent Femmes and the Del Fuegos Before they had a record out Before they went gold And started to grow.
I miss my sister I miss my sister I miss my sister I really miss her.
She's going home tomorrow, so till next visit! :D xoxo Sulky

Of sunsets and other matters
10.01.03 (9:19 pm) [edit]
Hello, faithful readers of my sad little blog. So sorry for the sporadic entries! But I have been going and doing and scampering and stuff so I haven't been seated much. Soon I will fix that confounded header, I swear...
Thank you for returning once again to peek in on me and see if I'm still baking or if I'm done yet. Tonight I feel pretty done! We (my sister, mother, and yours truly) just got back a while ago from a rural-type excursion into the Mark Twain National Forest here in fabulous Missouri. We were looking for, and have found, my sister's grandparents' farm from 40 years ago. We found it by fuzzy memory and with the help of an old gentleman farmer who remembered "those folks". It was quite the excursion. My sister spent a lot of her childhood on that farm, tucked away beyond a creek off the beaten path. She had a cow called Nellie. Isn't that cute? There does exist a darling photo of this towheaded little girl and her purty cow. I should scan it in here sometime. Anyway, she and mother were rather dismayed to find the house and barn overgrown and looking like this:
[image]Sulkbrarian_116531 9102.jpg[/image]
But we saw lots of great stuff anyway. Like this:
[image]Sulkbrarian_652309 335.jpg[/image]
And this:
[image]Sulkbrarian_934694 43.jpg[/image]
So. There you are. :)
Meanwhile, over in Libraryland, a land from which I seem to drift further and further every day, I am still not hired and am still applying. Grrr. I spent a good part of last night chatting about liberry stuff with Miss Micaela, my lovely friend who is also searching for library-style employment. We agreed it felt super good and invigorating to talk about reader's advisory and reference practices and children's lit and suchlike with someone who knows exactly what the other is talking about. She and I also had a nice personal visit recently. Here we are having inappropriate amounts of fun in the international grocery store:
[image]Sulkbrarian_107101 532.jpg[/image]
[image]Sulkbrarian_145967 681.jpg[/image] These are wines from Elvis knows where, which helpfully include artist renderings of the various species of meat you are supposed to have with them for your dinner. Isn't that nice?
[image]Sulkbrarian_507346 249.jpg[/image] Cough drops from Malaysia, appropriately named "Hacks". Plus a disturbing portrait of a rather burly man obviously afflicted with a terrible hacking cough. How serendipitous that someone makes a soothing lozenge just for that sort of thing!
You just can't take us anywhere. Sigh.
And especially for my DJ, and for your viewing pleasure, because I saw a really good one today, here are some otherworldly sunset pictures from my recent Northwest excursion:
[image]Sulkbrarian_111381 801.jpg[/image] Puget Sound, Golden Gardens Park, Ballard, WA. The beach on which my DJ grew up, right below his parents' house. Lovely for strolling and cookouts and just chilling. If I get to live there, this is where I want to go, like, eeeeeeeevery day.
[image]Sulkbrarian_103977 367.jpg[/image] Whidbey Island, WA. DJ will provide the name of the beach and the body of water, I am sure, because I have forgotten it in my blissed-out state. This was a big scampering day. People were all lined up on the beach, all ages, fishing for salmon for their dinner.
[image]Sulkbrarian_990908 974.jpg[/image] You turn a little to the right from the previous scene, and hey! A little island, one of cajillions popping up out of the water around there. I would like to build a wee fort on this one and eat salmon all day, like a bear.
[image]Sulkbrarian_152889 679.jpg[/image] View from Deception Pass Bridge, between Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands, WA. Okay, here's where I lost it big time. I was fine for a bit, just the usual shock and awe, but suddenly burst into tears and cried and cried looking at this sunset, taken the same day as the previous picture was. I was crying because I was so fortunate to see it, so happy to be there with my DJ, and so pained that it would be a while before I got to see another one from this same vantage point. Um, I can't even tell you what it is like to be looking at this in person. To smell the air, watch the birds, feel the crisp breeze, watch the whirlpools churning below. But see, DJ knew he would be able to elicit tears with this view. He is very clever, that one. It's why I like him. :P More Deception pix later. I can truthfully say it is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. More later. Soon! xoxo Sulky
