[Hey! Check out the improved library linktastic menu! If you see some you've never been to before, try 'em out--they're all great. Check out their links sections too! Always new places to go.
Also, check out my "friendlies" menu below that. Fascinating blogs, and well worth your time! Thanks to Arcade again!--]
A Happy Thanksgiving to those of you who celebrate. For my readers from other parts, that will be just a Happy Thursday to you. :D Enjoy your day!
So since I'm still dieting, let's talk about our favorite holiday dishes. Because that will just make it SO much easier to deal with. First of all, is it "stuffing" or "dressing" at your house? I'm assuming that if you are actually stuffing something with it, it's the former, and if it's on the side of the dish, the latter. That would make fine logical sense. At my house, though, logic has taken a flying leap. We haven't stuffed a bird in years (bacteria!!), but we still call it "stuffing". Such is life.
My Aunt Sue, may she rest in peace, always made a fantastic sweet potato casserole, very similar to this one. It was...just...wow. I've made it quite a bit; the last time was two years ago when I went to my library school pal Kelly's parents' house for Thanksgiving. Everyone LOVED it. Her mom made this incredible cranberry-orange relish, too. After dinner, Kelly and I got into our PJ's and cuddled up in warm throws for a special viewing of the trippy 70's holiday classic, "Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas". If you are unfamiliar with this Muppet-filled extravaganza (it's a book too), you must learn its' ways. There is nothing more unintentionally funny in the world. Their little legs! The evil punk band! God, I wish I had my own copy. :P
[image]Sulkbrarian_114029 7515.jpg[/image]
Is there a house in America that does NOT make the damn green bean casserole? If so, I'm coming over to smack you silly. You HAVE to; it's the LAW. You are allowed slight variations (such as my mom's, which involves adding some of the onions to the interior of the casserole, and then completely covering the top with the rest, which she crushes first), but if you stray too far from the original (Tex-Mex? Pan-Asian?), the French's people will pay you an unpleasant visit the day after your feast. I don't care what their website says; don't fall for it. It's just a test to see how well we avoid temptation and obey tradition. One of us...one of us...
Now for my DJ's favorite part: pie talk! I like to make pumpkin pie for Halloween, and apple and sweet potato pies for Thanksgiving. For Christmas, that's a mince pie, and a pecan pie. Of late, it's been this version. It'll knock yer sox off, baby. In fact, what you want to do is dial back on the bourbon a bit (I'm a Maker's Mark girl), and if you want, dial back on that chocolate a bit too. Whatever you do, do NOT increase the bourbon called for. At that point, your pie will have jumped the shark. :)
Ever had a deep-fried turkey? This ol' gal shows ya how. Mm, mm, mm. You'll never want to go back to baked! Thing is, it's a little dangerous. Watch that oil level and temperature like a hawk, and you should be fine.
Why are we talking about food?? (Oh yeah, I brought it up. Duh.) That's just a side-effect of Thanksgiving. Hopefully everyone will enjoy a nice warm, cozy day with family and friends. That's my wish for you! Tell me where you will be today. Make Sulky all warm and fuzzy. :D Mom and I will be at Aunt Lena's. You know, in case you need me, you'll know where I am.
(However, if you wanna share, I'd love to read what you folks are having for dinner. Hee hee. Calories by osmosis.)
xoxo Sulky

What’s up with those freaks over at Amazon? Yesterday, my featured suggestion was "Kenny Loggins", because I had recently bought some "Fleetwood Mac". Hello? I never bought any damn Fleetwood Mac. Why would I do that? Amazon, you rat bastard! You don't know me anymore! You don't bring me flowers! How could you! Oh, the betrayal. (However, as readers of this blog WELL know, I am ALL about the Kenny Loggins.)
Destined to remain one of life's eternal mysteries, I'm sure.
As you may know, last weekend was Johnny Cash tribute weekend on CMT. I kinda had it on in the background most of the time, but I really sat up and paid attention when they ran a half-hour excerpt from a concert back in the 70’s, at a Tennessee state prison. It was stone cold awesome. That man never did anything half-assed, even if it was a show for a bunch of convicts (in fact, he put extra effort into it; sweating, breaking out the harmonica, you name it, he did it, and the convicts loved it). He opened, logically, with "Folsom Prison Blues" (is there a better line in authentic country music than:
“But I shot a man in Reno Just to watch him die”?
I ask you, now. That's some powerful shit.).
[image]Sulkbrarian_304173 111.jpg[/image]
Then, a kickass medley of train songs ("Hey Porter", "Wreck of the Old 97", "Orange Blossom Special"). It was an old crummy videotape, but it was mesmerizing. Then on Sunday, they re-ran this really top-shelf tribute concert from the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. He certainly got a helluva send-off.
I know there's some great box sets out there, but I'm waiting to see if they will issue an American Recordings set of the four albums he did for Rick Rubin. That’s where my money will go. I know about "Unearthed", which sounds incredible (lots of unreleased material, etc.), but I would rather have the four albums. We’ve got old LPs of the earlier stuff coming out our ears in this family. My mother grew up on the Carter Family (oh Lord, she looooooved Maybelle Carter), and eventually, The Tennessee Three, and Johnny Cash and June Carter, but I want the new stuff. Ive heard a good deal of it over the years, but I want it. I would say that besides his cover of "Hurt", "Delia's Gone" would be my favorite cover song. Same level of pain, same kind of loss and regret in that one. Turns out, it's an old honkytonk song, then Harry Belafonte recorded it, then the late Mr. Cash tweaked it his way. A lyric sample:
"Delia, oh Delia Delia all my life If I hadn't shot poor Delia I'd have had her for my wife Delia's gone, One more round; Delia's gone."
You can't beat that with a stick. God bless him.
In other news:
--I'm looking for tattoo designs. I have several in mind. Some from long ago, some from newer days. Tell me about your ink, your experience. I'm thinking left ankle or left shoulderblade; I'm thinking Celtic knots or crosses (heritage), I'm thinking some kind of book-related thingy (profession). I wouldn't get the bookfaery, though, that's Tracey's. But something similar, perhaps! I'm also thinking save some room to get something with my DJ. He's game.
--Damn redneck in a Ford pickup tried to go around me the other day when I was stopped for a schoolbus. Kids all over the road, and he's trying to put himself where they are. You know I rolled down the window and screamed.
--My new friend Pinky told about seeing a stuffed cat outside her P.O. recently. I saw a book of snowman stamps lying on the ground on my way in to send off two more Seattle applications. I took 'em in, tried to give 'em back, was met with incredulous blank stares, was told they could not take them and would not keep them in case someone came to retrieve them. Therefore, I now have a mess of stamps. I'm scared of the karma; probably have four flat tires in the morning.
--Check out the girly Legos. Snort. Those would SO be a choking hazard for me (I'm oral; shut up) as I muttered to myself and cobbled together mobiles and picture frames at my desk at work. If I had a job, that is.
--I have new shimmery lippy balm! Mmmmmmmmmm; delicious. Pepperminty and crisp. I think it's a temporary holiday promotion :(. It's not on the Body Shop site, but in the store you can buy this new lippy balm, called "Snow". Pretty packaging, too!
--Everyone go read Retrogirl's recent posts about the frustrations of librarianship, and her recent good news. Then, go have a hearty laff at metadata queen Kansas! Thank you for the links, ladies! :D

Who is that? Why, it's this lady:
[image]Sulkbrarian_122854 042.jpg[/image]
I'm in enormo-violation of copyright laws here, I'm quite sure; go to Anne Taintor for fantastic retro magnets, coasters, postcards, cards, journals, notepads, et al. If I had the money, my whole place would just be Taintorized!! 'Cause, y'know, that's classy an' stuff. :P
Okay! We've got several votes for the cookies and the nursing/vet homes visits! Thank you all for your two cents! :D I have to say, I'm down with that, myself. I love doing this kind of thing; you get a charge that lasts and lasts, and it's nothing at all, really, just a gesture. Imagine how I'd feel if I actually constructively USED my unemployment time here to, oh, I don't know, go volunteer to READ to these folks. Imagine how THEY'D feel. Man. Of course, none of y'all ('cept people I know all personally and so forth) have ever heard me read aloud, so...yeah. Maybe it's best I stay away.
All right now. This here is one damn fine cookie, I have got to say. I got this recipe from the mother of a friend of mine when I was in Lutheran school. (Boy, there's a topic for another time.) You do get a weakened, similar effect by just upping the peppermint extract, and I've seen soooooooooooooo many lazy amateurs attempt just that, but it doesn't have the crunch of the candy canes. You WANT that. It's IMPORTANT. For some reason, King Leo peppermint sticks work really well. Use whatever. But this here recipe is rockin' the classic, old-skool candy cane flavor--none o' that jalapeno crap you see in stores nowadays. There's just enough "Grumpy Old Man" in Sulky's nature to kick all y'all's asses if I see anybody coyly subbing those pukey blueberry canes in this shit. Don't even tell me your variations. I don't want to know; I'm sensitive that way.
Right, then. Recipe, straightaway:
Chocolate Chunk Candy Cane Cookies
You will need: 1 c. softened butter 1/2 c. white sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract (I mean the good stuff, don't skimp) 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract (ditto) 2 3/4 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. cream of tartar 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1 (5 oz.) milk chocolate candy bar, chopped (or, they sell those actual chunks now, but it's gotta be milk) 1 c. PEPPERMINT candy canes, coarsely chopped (just, like, put 'em in a towel and whang on 'em with the meat tenderizer a few times)
Prep time 25 mins., cook time 10 mins. (you'll be scarfing 'em down in about 45 mins. from whence you began); makes 36 cookies. Or, like, 4 big ones.
Preheat oven to 400.
(Medium bowl) Cream butter and sugar till smooth; beat eggs in one at a time. Stir in the two extracts.
(Separate bowl) Combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, salt. Then add this to creamed mixture; stir till "incorporated" (that's my fancy-schmancy FoodTV word). Add chocolate chunks and candy cane pieces. Ohhh, hells yes.
Drop spoon-formed balls (wow, that just really doesn't sound appetizing) 2 in. apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake 8-10 mins. Let them cool. (I'm talkin' to you, DJ.)The end. Big ol' glass of cold milk. Drift into pleasant sugar coma.
Addendum: I suppose if you HAD to, like if there was a time issue or something, you could use pre-fab cookie dough and just kinda whomp the candy cane bits in there real good. But that's sort of an ungodly thought.
Lemme know how they turn out! I'll post a photo during the bakeathon. They are really very pretty cookies!
(I'm watching you all. Don't make me crazy, now.)
xoxo Sulky

11.14.03 (5:05 pm) [edit]
Hey, peeps. Sulky's in a better mood today. Thanks to you all for your concern...sometimes things just hit you, you know? Usually an episode of "Cops" takes the sting out and makes ya forget, though. Because, I mean, it's "Cops". And there's NO WAY my life is worse than that, and that makes me happy.
Thanks a million to ArcadeAttendant for lending me his "Other Librarian Weblogs" script. The handy drop-down menu is located to your right. I will be tweaking it shortly to show some different links. Enjoy! ---
Nothing much to report. Made some lovely Moroccan lentil salad and a different hummous recipe (because of my insane love for ginger and chives, I added those two things to both, and left off the green onions; also substituted cucumber for the yellow pepper--didn't have any, then added a little balsamic vinegar to the salad, and a little olive oil to the hummous), still exercisin' madly, still losing weight, still applying to Pacific Northwest jobs, still awaiting the new episodes of Queer Eye with more than my share of hysterical excitement. :)
Did anybody see that South Park a couple of weeks ago where Cartman, Butters, and Token formed a Christian supergroup called "Faith + One"? I alternated between laughing my ass off and cowering from the surely-imminent heavenly lightning strike. I'm doomed. :D
[image]Sulkbrarian_545155 371.jpg[/image]
Okay. Here's the cool, interactive part of "fling fling!" where you get to help me decide what to do for Christmas. I always do something like this (I pushed my family into it long ago, and now they don't have a choice, plus it relieves a lot of awkwardness, actually, and enables us to be together for more than 1.5 nanoseconds without an argument breaking out) The options:
--Bake delicious chocolate chunk cookies with busted-up candy canes in 'em and deliver to nursing and veterans' homes --Take sparkly balloons and glittery mini-snowmen to the two Pediatric units nearby --Consult the Area Council on Aging for any suggestions on delivering canned goods to shut-ins --The quick and easy route, serving Christmas dinner at a senior center or soup kitchen
I await your input and/or any other suggestions eagerly! See, Thanksgiving takes care of itself. a) I'm dieting this year and I ain't cookin' a damn thing; b) everyone's too sleepy and tired and football-crazed to do much of anything but narcalounge.
What're you folks doing for the holidays? Eek, time to get those cards out already. But it was just Halloween! Grr!
xoxo Sulky

The theme for today is: dunno.
Dunno what's gonna happen to me if I can't get a job soon Dunno what's gonna happen to me if I can't move to Seattle soon Dunno what's gonna happen to my DJ if things don't look up for him Dunno what's gonna happen to my sister if she has to stay trapped in a loveless marriage much longer Dunno what's gonna happen to my sister if her health continues to mysteriously deteriorate Dunno what's gonna happen to my mother if I get a job and move to Seattle and am not around to keep an eye on her as she is aging and her health is deteriorating Dunno what's gonna happen to my uncle who has Alzheimer's or my aunt who is killing herself taking care of him Dunno what's gonna happen to my aunt who has Parkinson's or her daughter who is killing herself taking care of her

11.11.03 (3:10 pm) [edit]
But it sucks to be home again. So how come I'm doing a jig? Hmm, good question. A question without an answer! (However, info professionals know there's no such thing--so here's my request for proposals, goin' out to all y'all liberry types--why is Sulky doing a jiggity jig if it sucks to be home again, home again? Please leave your documents in my drop box. Thank you.)
What? Oh, nothing. No, I'm okay, really. Just caffeinated, that's all.
Had a lovely trip with my lovely friend Miss Micaela! We:
--hung out with her awesome family --played with equally awesome dogs and cats --made delicious things to eat --wove baskets with Girl Scouts --ogled the crystal-clear stars and moon at night --tried to ogle the lunar eclipse but no dice --petted goats and chickens --had a wine-infused girly giggly slumber party --played dress-up --fretted over being unemployed and examined a great resume book for librarians --played with perfume and makeup in Sephora and Nordstrom and Makes Scents and online (bad girls) --ate nummy Indian food --said hi to Seth --played with spices and took pictures of beautiful orange bittersweet --wandered downtown Columbia , popping in and out of Maude Vintage, Cool Stuff, Poppy, Blackberry Exchange, Form and Function, and Slackers --said bye bye to the scorched earth where the Heidelberg used to be before it burned to the ground --hung out with Connie and Amanda and other library school folks and ate tasty nonfat dairy-free mango coconut ice cream from Sparky's --mildly irritated her husband, R, by mixing martinis two nights in a row and acting like dorks till the wee hours --helped R with door sanding --shopped for soft, warm yarn and fuzzy trim (Micaela is going to crochet me a pretty winter hat!) --shopped in vain for a chain belt for Micaela's pretty grey dress --played with condoms (you don't want to know, trust me) --slept a lot --went to an interesting open house --played with cookbooks and recipes a bunch --found pretty towel hooks for Micaela's parents --found something funny for my DJ and it's a secret so be quiet now --oh yeah! went to a kickass library seminar with Sarah Howard and lots of great youth librarians and learned a bunch about programming and funding and output measures (Sulky made everyone laugh with her silly Rainbow Fish story hour stretch)
The end! But I don't want to be back home. I want to play some more. Alas, my job application materials are calling...so have a great day, remember the veterans, and bye for now!

Look no further for all your Elvis Costello needs
11.10.03 (1:02 am) [edit]
My desert island album has been, for quite some time now, The Juliet Letters by EC and the Brodsky Quartet. Until today.
"You appeared when I was lost in reverie / If this is not a dream, it's my mistake / And now I lie in wait for dawn to break / I'm fairly sure I'm wide awake."
You know, I don't really know why I'm surprised. My man here has this little habit of topping himself over and over again. Who else can go from Spike to Mighty Like a Rose to TJL to Brutal Youth in the span of just a few short years? Who else has done that? There are always candidates for breathtaking versatility in the songwriter's musical beauty pageant (James Taylor, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, yadda yadda), but...um...yeah. From All This Useless Beauty to Painted from Memory to For the Stars to When I Was Cruel to North? In eight years? Come on. That takes it for me, as far as modern music goes. This album reminds me of why I fell in love with EC in the first place; I've fallen in love all over again. Which only makes sense, as this new release is clearly a love story. Two love stories, told in linear form: from his divorce from Cait O'Riordan through the numb, confused, and stranded period he suffered afterward, to his surprising new love with Diana Krall. (No one was more surprised than he; the inside of the CD cover features a very shocked-looking close-up portrait of Mr. McManus.) Some of his best work was inspired by Ms. O'Riordan, herself quite the musical personality (Pogues; et al). But we can see that EC + DK = nothing but good for fans of his love songs.
"And as a consequence I can see out of the gloom / That I gathered about myself / That I thought would flatter me / What the hell was the matter with me."
The artist and friend. Any friend of squirrels... [image]Sulkbrarian_111642 188.jpg[/image]
I realize I'm carrying on. But this man really is the definitive modern ballad master, thanks in no small part to the arrangements; both the orchestration and the musicians on this album are pure genius (Steve Nieve, the Brodsky Quartet, Marc Ribot, and Jazz Passengers are back again, just for starters). He's been knocking our socks off with ballads for years; North just knocks all of that in the dirt. North: it's what's for dinner.
"There will be days when you must go from my sight / There may be nights when clouds deny us starlight / Only time will tell us / I hope that it speaks gently if it isn't meant to be / Then again / By then we might not be listening so attentively."
So, no fooling. Do yourself an enormous emotional favor and snag a copy of North. Do it today. This man has never sounded better, his lyrics have never been more forthright, and that's a bold statement indeed. In fact, it could be argued that after nearly 30 years in the business, he has finally learned how to write an honest song. Of all the years I've been a fan, of all the albums I've eagerly awaited, this was the most surprising and immediately endearing.
"Some things are too personal / Too intimate to spill / And gentlemen never speak of them / And this one never will."
And if you're still pissed about his departure from punk, who the hell asked you? Grow up already. It's been 25 years; get over it.
"Maybe this is the love song that I refused to / Write her when I loved her like I used to."
:) xoxo Sulky

Evening, folks. Sulky's going on a wee trip for a few days (library seminar with her friend Micaela, followed by general silliness), so will be outta pocket till Sunday. Hope your weekends all go swimmingly! Bundle up, it's cold out there. Meanwhile, please enjoy:
[image]Sulkbrarian_334734 182.jpg[/image] Thanks to ArcadeAttendant and Tiny Little Librarian for the building instructions. This charmingly Legoesque figure represents Sulky in post-graduate-degree, pre-library-employment hell. Nice and toasty here--don't need no mittens or nuthin'!
[image]Sulkbrarian_118926 655.jpg[/image] This image comes to you from Sulky (still most definitely in hell) playing around recently with what it would look like if she had her own fey 80's synth-pop album cover. It's pretty darn fey. Mission accomplished! :D
Today my former college roommate, who is a caseworker for DFS in Florida, informed me that she believes she has been Crank Yanked. Or, at least, this is what she suspects. I have heard the taped phone conversation (she's crafty, that one) and must concur. Guy calls up trying to place a low-cal fast-food order with her because he's "watching his figure". Gets extremely irate every time she tries to tell him he's got the wrong number. Finally she just starts playing along and asking him what type of dressing he wants, what he wants to drink, etc. It rules. Probably just some bored-ass Florida resident bargain-basement faux Crank Yanker...but he was pretty good. :P
Later taters! xoxo Sulky

[Many kind thanks to George here at tBlog for my new bling bling header! Whatchy'all think? Now my blawg is as purty as all dem other blawgs. Well, it's getting there, anyhow!]
What up, crew. Feeling better about it being fall. I think the candy-beggin' shorties cheered me up! (I'm sure fall really cares that I was ambivalent about its' presence this year, and also feels better now that I'VE come around.)
Dressed as Professor McGonagall (if you have to ask...), which certain of the shorties thought was amusing. Typical exchange:
Ersatz McGonagall (as played by Sulky): "Hey there, Happy Halloween!! Oooooooh, scary!! WOW! Best psycho slasher costume I've seen all night! Ya like Skittles?" (desperately hoping the hulking teenager before her is, in fact, actually IN costume and not really a serial killer)
Psycho Slasher (like I say, the kids love me): "Got any Jack Daniels?"
EMcG: "Sure do! Not for you, though! Here, have a Caramel Apple Pop instead. Won't rot yer liver as fast!"
PS (thickly; clearly stoned): "Who the hell're you supposed to be?"
EMcG: "Andrew? Andrew from down the street--is that you? Damn, you grew up. You wanna stop driving by my house at a billion miles an hour, please? There's dogs and cats wandering around, and you're gonna run 'em over one of these days and I'll hafta clean up the blood."
PS (blinking): "Huh?"
EMcG (heavy sigh): "Here, man. Here's your damn sour gummy worms. You were a lot cuter when your mom used to drag you to the library. Now get the hell off my porch."
Or something like that.
Noooo...I'm just joshin' ya. The stoner kid was really dressed as Nelly, which was far more frightening. :) It was a lovely night--good turnout, lotsa imaginative costumes, best weather I've ever seen around here for trick-or-treating (didn't rain for once!), amusing incidents involving me scolding Ms. Granger and Mr. Weasley for being out of Gryffindor so late at night; feeling Superman's muscles and telling him he could beat up the Hulk any ol' day (I think I made the Hulk cry); babies dressed as lions and bunnies, and what have you. I love Halloween. :D
Here! I took these just for you. Enjoy!:
This is one of two tulip trees around the corner. Pink flowers in spring, orange berries in fall; perfect. [image]Sulkbrarian_104418 9383.jpg[/image]
Just purty. [image]Sulkbrarian_336022 317.jpg[/image]
Rosehips. Prettier than the roses they bear. [image]Sulkbrarian_668261 729.jpg[/image]
One of my porch displays. Wish it was the children's section at Yourtown Public Library; I love doing that shit. [image]Sulkbrarian_531032 716.jpg[/image]
Now tell me about your Halloween--hope it was fun! Happy November. Jeebus, the hour grows late. Bye bye, year...:( Whoops, ambivalent again!
xoxo Sulky
