...by way of Pinky, by way of others: my highly-apropos Goreyfied quiz result, which precisely matches my current state of sobriety (or lack thereof):
You will drink too much gin. Not the worst way to die, but you won't remember too much of your life. Hey, at least you made some people laugh!
What horrible Edward Gorey Death will you die? brought to you by Quizilla
Yes; o my friends. It has indeed come to this. Well, it's a great way to go! And hey, I've had a good run. At least it wasn't by ennui or axing.

Hi. For those of you keeping up with this foolishment, my DJ (formerly the dude I would have moved across the country for; now currently residing in the 8th Circle of Hell, with a bit of luck) finally had the sack to ante up and tell me exactly why he fell out of love with me: it was my weight. That's right: I was just not thin enough. So, what that means is, he lied to me when he said it didn't matter that I was a little heavy (albeit becoming less so every day, as I continue to slog through The Diet that Would Not End), and lied every time he told me he still loved me. So I promptly dumped the asshat.
I don't usually rely on dead poets to do my talkin' for me when I break up with the mens, but this time, I let the unassailable Mrs. Parker assist me. She was just so good at this sort of thing:
I Know I Have Been Happiest I know I have been happiest at your side; But what is done, is done, and all's to be. And small the good, to linger dolefully-- Gayly it lived, and gallantly it died. I will not make you songs of hearts denied, And you, being man, would have no tears of me, And should I offer you fidelity, You'd be, I think, a little terrified. Yet this the need of woman, this her curse; To range her little gifts, and give, and give, Because the throb of giving's sweet to bear. To you, who never begged me songs nor verse, My gift shall be my absence, while I live; But after that, my dear, I cannot swear.
So. That's that. Thanks, Dot; you always were a good egg. Now, where'd I put that hip flask, again...

"It's when I'm weary of considerations..."
01.27.04 (3:09 am) [edit]
About a hundred years ago, back in the day, I was a hi-skool state champeen in poetry-reading. Y'all remember speech and debate club. Or oratory club. Or whatever we all called it. I have to say that a large amount of my life during this time was most pleasantly spent prepping my next storytelling piece, or poem, dramatic interpretation, or duet acting, or my bestest most favoritestest thing ever, debate. I was often triple-entered at contests, running around from strange classroom to classroom, with abrupt segues from "The Frog Prince" to "The Human Comedy" to a cross-ex debate about nuclear proliferation (it was the 80's).
My hi skool is now, and has been for many years, consistently, formidably at or near the top of the winner's circle in local, district, and state tourneys. We always had damn tough competition, so if we won something, we knew we'd earned it. At the time, when it wasn't as "okay" as it is now for kids to be wiggy and outspoken and unashamedly animated, these little pursuits were a much relied upon outlet for dorks like me. :) Later, in college and grad skool, I became a judge for Lincoln-Douglas and cross-ex debate every year. It always made me happy to get a chance to check out the fresh crop of dead meat--um, new entries--each spring. After the final rounds, I'd sneak over to the poetry and storytelling areas and quietly eavesdrop on the contestants from my hi-skool. I heard a lot of good stuff; these kids are still kicking ass and taking names.
The poem I won at state with was "Birches", by Robert Frost. I chose it because of the imagery and symbolism and the sound of the words and the characterization and because it was then uncommonly used. I love that poem and I still think of parts of it, and the pictures in my head that went along with it, from time to time. Yesterday, when I woke up and looked out my kitchen window, my favorite bit came to mind:
"Often you must have seen them Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning After a rain. They click upon themselves As the breeze rises, and turn many-coloured As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel. Soon the sun's warmth makes them shed crystal shells Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away You'd think the inner dome of heaven had fallen..."
Here's what I saw:

[image]Sulkbrarian_130030 371.jpg[/image]
Many of you are having just this kind of weather; it makes for awful driving, but...it's just so beautiful. And when I am particularly troubled, as Frost says, "weary of considerations", this is the kind of stuff I concentrate on to smooth down the ruffled feathers. The tiny stuff that makes you breathe easier. I hope everyone gets to look around today and see something amazing, that calms the nerves, and slows you down.

Stolen from Annie
01.24.04 (3:07 pm) [edit]
My apologies, Annie . I have done a few listy-type things here at fling fling! (don't you love how I make it sound like a corporation, like it's Hudsucker, Inc. and I've got droves of drones working in the subbasement?), but on the whole, I prefer regular writing. I really liked this one, though, so thought I'd blatantly rip it off:
15 Years Ago, I: 1. Was 19 years old. 2. Was spending all my time going to shows and being the music director at my college radio station. 3. Was frequently chemically altered. 4. Was dating a guy who wore clothespins in his hair, Gibby-style. 5. Was taking a full load of classes, living in the Fine Arts House in Laura Stephens Hall, and working in my college library.
10 Years Ago, I: 1. Was 24 years old. 2. Was having my gallbladder removed and about to embark on a physical nightmare as a result of botched surgery. Which resulted in a financial nightmare. 3. Was not dating anyone. 4. Was doing commercial voice-overs and DJ'ing at a Hot A/C station against my will. 5. Was stupid enough to cut bangs into my hair, "Reality Bites"-style.
5 Years Ago, I: 1. Was 29 years old. 2. Was working in my hometown public library. 3. Was going insane trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. The MLS bug had not yet bitten. 4. Was really, really into vintage hats and making hatpins. 5. Was dating a man too old for me, but damn, could he ever...uh...yeah, so...onward...
2 Years Ago, I: 1. Was in my second semester of grad skool. 2. Was sadly living on campus, but I had my own room. 3. Was drinking too much Vanilla Coke and eating too much bad dorm food. 4. Was in between two big relationships. 5. Was re-addicted to college radio and going to shows 24/7.
1 Year Ago, I: 1. Was in despair at not having a professional position. Some things never change. 2. Was in a beautiful relationship with the man of my dreams. 3. Was trying to handle being around too many relatives. 4. Was missing my grad skool friends. Still am, always do. 5. Was listening to a lot...I mean, a lot...of Stereolab.
Yesterday, I: 1. Masked my face and did my nails. 2. Talked to my sister. 3. Filled out my millionth application for work. 4. Finished reading a very good biography of Dorothy Parker. 5. Cried a little because my beautiful relationship with my dream man is turning into a nightmare.
Today, I: 1. Fed squirrels and birds. 2. Drank some more soy milk. 3. Talked to my sister. 4. Cried a little more, same reason. 5. Went for a lovely walk.
Tomorrow, I: 1. Will wash my hair. 2. Will prepare for my YA Librarian interview next week. 3. Will email my references. 4. Will make a delicious salad. 5. Will probably cry a little more, yep, you guessed it.
Okay, your turn. :) xoxo Sulky

Jolly good
01.19.04 (10:36 pm) [edit]
I'm not an expert on Japanese culture or history by any means, nor do I know whether the new Tom Cruise wingding "The Last Samurai" is in only minor violation of either, or is just far afield. Didn't even bother to check to see if it's based on some historical fiction novel, or was an original screenplay, or what. Just blindly went to see it. What I can tell you is that, on its face, it's ripping good fun. There's a lot to really like about it: lush, incredible scenery, defined and variegated characters, good moral conflicts, and some absolutely kick-ass battle scenes, both small-scale and large. Unfortunately, sometimes the editing in the battle scenes is too choppy, and on occasion the battle scenes morph into this unnecessarily orgiastic slo-mo bloodfest, but on the whole...good story and worth seeing. Predictable only on rare occasion, and pretty good acting all around.
I also went to see "Mona Lisa Smile", for the second time. I think it's fantastic. Being the product of a liberal arts education myself (I minored in Humanities, Art, and Art History, all of which provided me with more good memories than I could possibly explain), having also attended a small, private women's college (at a dear financial price, but well worth it in many ways), this movie greatly fascinates me on those levels. I highly recommend it; good messages of opportunity and equality in there, wrapped in some simply lovely eye candy. My college roommate's mother, an incredibly sharp woman, was first a Wellesley graduate, and later dean of students there; and our former college president had been a Wellesley psychology professor. The year after I graduated, a former student of hers, a Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton, delivered a stunningly poor commencement speech at my college. Not all Wellesley girls can turn a deft phrase, it would seem...as evidenced by other Clintonesque slips of the tongue throughout the years. To say nothing of questionable taste in men.
The costumes, though, from top-to-bottom, are picture-perfect illustrations of 1950's women's wear; far more accurate than some of the set decorations. (My mother, who was a typical housewife/fashion plate during this period, vouches for this.) And the students smoke like fiends, which gets a little annoying (although as we know, cigarettes were advertised out the wazoo then, as being these harmless, delicious smoky treats you would employ to help you relax and socialize). But you will really dig this movie for the well-drawn characters; in particular, Marcia Gay Harden's antisocial etiquette instructor, a forward-thinking, terribly savvy college nurse, and a winsome, cherubic, slightly pudgy student named Connie Baker. Oh. And um. The.....effervescent Ms. Maggie Gyllenhaal, here playing...well, pretty much herself. If she were a college student. From 50 years ago.
Purrrrrrrrrrrrrr. :P
Oh, yes. If Sulky played for the other team...she'd be ALL about that. Ahem. I digress.
So yeah! Go see them there two flicker shows, and report back here. Have fun! :)
xoxo me

Sorry. Currently residing in an outer plane of existence; couldn't reach my keyboard.
Still can't manage to type one syllable about the Main Thing that Has Been Bothering Me of late, so let's just lay that aside for now and think about muffins.
I know I sounded like I was huffing paint in the post below. I still believe in the things I said and I was indeed offended, but old regular not-jacked-up Sulky would have been more inclined to just go "hmph; that's stupid" and let it go at that. New, all-mess'-up Sulky lit out after somebody, which is not the usual methodology practiced here at fling fling! Which some of you kindly pointed out to me, in an effort to wrest me from the dark side. You have my eternal gratitude. :)
More writing soon. My thoughts are coming very slow and small. Come back, though. We're gonna have a sock hop and bob for apples later. And I know you won't want to miss that.
Meanwhile, let the knowledge that it is nearly Girl Scout Cookie Time take over your higher faculties. (It may be time to break this diet. For like, ten minutes. Can I?) And if you have leftovers, you can make things out of them. :P

[Ed. note: taking a break from hiatus to post something incredibly stupid; join me in reading and absorbing and opining, won't you? I'm sure this is gonna start a big ol' information science street fight; like I care.]
Submitted for your perusal: this recent "field guide" to "typical" librarians by SJ, whom, until now, I had thought was a completely awesome chick. She's linked in my drop down menu, although not for much longer. Like she cares.
If any of you read this and are also on the NEXGEN or PUBLIB listservs, I bet I can predict your reactions pretty well.
Knock yerselves out. Not that anyone this cracked out will care what anyone else's opinions are, but you know what I'm sayin'.
Just...wow. And to think: I had been thinking this girl would be fun to hang out with.
Back soon, thanks for your friendship and patience, all will become clear soon, heart you all, Sulky

Once more Sulky's takin' an unexpected blogging break. Lots of crap going on and little of it pleasant or even decent blog-fodder, at least, not at the moment. Oughtn't I be ashamed to look at life events as either blog-fodder or not? Yes. Yes, I should. And am. Indubitably.
So I'll be back in two shakes. I'm not going anywhere. :) I will be reading your blogs as per usual, and thank you for coming to mine. Meanwhile, check out the new AbFab episodes on Oxygen. I've been impressed so far (more so than with the most recent, short-lived revival on Comedy Central). So far, Saffy's been a human shield in Iraq and has gotten pregnant, Eddy is using Bubble's voice on her alarm clock and has gotten a spray-on tan with horrid results, and Pats just keeps faithfully chuffing her fags and upending the Bolly.
Also, do yourselves a favor and check out these wonderful folks: GenreChick, Ladyblog, and Book-Kitten . Talk about fab! Permalinks to them and a few more library bloggers in my drop-down menu --- soon!
