Robin's song meme
05.23.04 (4:36 pm)   [edit]
Indie rock mommy Robin, she of the beautifully-designed, pistachio-hued, and chock full of eclectic goodness she*had*a*thir st*for*knowledge, and the elegantly spare and most entertaining song o' the day, has posted a wonderful song meme. I love your answers, missy, and I enjoyed the questions so much I thought I would replicate them here. Hope you don't mind!:

1. Your favorite song with the name of a city in the title or text.
"Piazza, New York Catcher", Belle and Sebastian

2. A song you've listened to repeatedly when you were depressed at some point in your life.
"Fallen", Elvis Costello

3. Ever bought an entire album just for one song and wound up disliking everything but that song? Gimme that song.
"Lovefool", Cardigans (come on, you did it too, and boy, didn't that suck?)

4. A great song in a language other than English.
"O Estrangeiro", Caetano Veloso (although there is some namechecking of artists with English names)

5. Your least favorite song on one of your favorite albums of all time.
"That's Really Super, Supergirl", XTC (from Skylarking). Not unpleasant, and in fact I do like it, but it causes a tiny rift in an otherwise perfect album, to me. Just my 'pinion.

6. A song you like by someone you find physically unattractive or otherwise repellent.
"Leafy Incline", Tad

7. Your favorite song that has expletives in it that's not by Liz Phair.
"Army", Ben Folds 5

8. A song that sounds as if it's by someone British but isn't.
"Summerteeth", Wilco (it's their Beatles fetish)

9. A song you like (possibly from your past) that took you forever to finally locate a copy of.
For the longest time, I kept wanting this bootleg of "Kerosene" by Big Black that has a bunch of other songs on it, including "Jordan, Minnesota". Well, that only took about forever. I could have bought it directly from Black Death Records, but I wanted to find it myself. Couldn't locate it in stores, obviously. Finally! Traded a friend for a signed copy of "Bucky Fellini" by Dead Milkmen. I clearly came out ahead. Of course, he thinks he came out ahead, since he was an even bigger Milkhead than I...

10. A song that reminds you of spring but doesn't mention spring at all.
"Song for the Morning to Sing", Boo Radleys

11. A song that sounds to you like being happy feels.
"Alright", Supergrass (despite the misspelling that grates on my nerves like fingernails on a chalkboard)

12. Your favorite song from a non-soundtrack compilation album.
"Lucy", Helium (from What's Up Matador)

13. A song that reminds you of high school.
"Beach Party Vietnam", Dead Milkmen

14. A song that reminds you of college.
You couldn't leave your dorm room without hearing that damn "Personal Jesus" by that damn Depeche Mode. Blech.

15. A song you actually like by an artist you otherwise dislike.
"Fast as You Can", Fiona Apple

16. A song by a band that features three or more female members.
"Never Say Never", that dog.

17. One of the earliest songs that you can remember listening to.
"If", Bread (scarred for life now)

18. A song you've been mocked by friends for liking.
I seriously do like "Toxic", by Britneeeeeee. Go ahead, mock if you dare. I see that TV, behind you, all tuned to the VH1 and shit. :P

19. A really good cover version you think no one else has heard.
"A Simple Desultory", Swamp Zombies (I will give you money if you have heard it)

20. A song that has helped cheer you up (or empowered you somehow) after a breakup or otherwise difficult situation.
"Evening at Lafitte's", Squirrel Nut Zippers

Your turn!
S.

And! Bonus pitchers!

A magnolia pod just starting to bloom...
[image]Sulkbrarian_493750 228.jpg[/image]

...and a bloom just starting to open. Right now, before the air becomes heavy with their full, rich scent, they smell light and citrusy, like pink lemonade. Nummy...

I found a new friend/Underneath my pillow
05.22.04 (3:40 pm)   [edit]
Hey all! Once again, got kind of preoccupied with the usual stuff, but there are some new twists, and I'm hoping for good things. The jobhunt in Libraryland goes in waves; that is, as far as entry-level positions are concerned, and it is just now coming off another mini-downswing. There were many prospects from New Year’s until a couple of weeks ago, but I can see it on a little upswing right now. I expect it to continue this pendulum effect for a while, because I assume hiring funds in the fiscal '04 coffers will begin to dwindle, and the summer reading programs are gearing up--so people won't have tons of time to hire and train youth librarians. We shall continue to watch with bated breath. You don't know how much I look forward to the day where I can proclaim here, in the biggest type possible, "I GOT A JOB!!!" Look for it. Hope it will happen soon...and for my pals still lookin' too. Good on ya...

In niftier news, I have made a new friend, and he’s just the bee's knees! His wife is a librarian who stumbled on my blog, and passed it onto him (specifically that "Championship Vinyl" entry from last month, because her husband, a webguy, is the same way about rekkid sto's, and was a college radio MD too)! We’ve been reminiscing about radio and our favorite bands and the like. Thus has now begun a mix CD tradin' post!

Here is my new friend, Jeremy.
[image]Sulkbrarian_329403 618.jpg[/image]
Go see him; he has a most entertaining and thoughtful blog! His pal Gretchen and I are also having a meeting of the minds. :)

And (Megan Began!) I bought my ticket to see the show. They added a stop in Columbia, Missouri, this October. If I’m not still living there then, I’ll put it up for sale. Sure hope it lives up to the reviews I’ve seen!

Been reading everyone’s blogs too--you’re a lively bunch to keep up with, for sure! I love reading what you’re up to…some of you aren't havin' a real great spring right now, due to one thing or the other, so my hugs and extra kisses to you. Thinkin' boutcha...always! Even if I'm not taking time to comment. Yer on m'mind. :)

And I finally got through the hellish quagmire that is ALA balloting. The results came out pretty good, I think. I hope!

Smarty Jones, will you marry me??? Sigh! Yeah, I know, I know. What about the children... Well, I can't help it! I can't wait--I think he's gonna win the Triple Crown!

Psst...Sulky's got a secret...awright. I have developed a raging case of insomnia since I've been out of grad skool lo these many months. Only one thing calms me down and puts me to sleep. No, it's not bourbon, although that was a good guess. It's GSN reruns in the middle of the night. I like the old "Password" a lot...but..."What's My Line?" really sends me. Oh, how I adore that show. You've got your host, Mr. John Charles Daly, and your panelists, Miss Dorothy Kilgallen, and your Miss Arlene Francis, and--swoon--your Mr. Bennett Cerf (whose son Christopher spearheads the "Between the Lions" campaign/show/juggernaut/ empire over there on the PBS.) Yes, I have a crush on the late Harvard scholar and Random House bigwig. He's an older gentleman, too. Scandal!! I think it's his gentle demeanor and amusing voice. Basically, that's why I like the show. Everyone, including the celebrity panelists and mystery guests, seems to be so witty and well-educated and well-spoken and well-mannered and well-dressed and charming and funny and genteel and elegant. Sigh...how come I can't live in the Fifties? (Not that I would fit in, but I could be a fly on the wall!) Or just visit for a bit, Pleasantville-styl e?

Pinky is right! The new Todd Oldham convertible sofa is absolutely wonderful. My friend M. and I were trying to decide what fabric would look best in her new living room. This is just the sort of thing M. adores, particularly as she was an undergraduate design student--sleek, stylish, well-designed, versatile furniture!

I cannot wait to see this. And, this. This looks pretty cute, too!

I have something else interesting to tell you but not quite yet. Not quite yet. :P  Trying to hold it in...whew! I made it! Heeeeehee. What a tease.

Finally, random Kansas City photos; old-style, new-style:

Gingerbread, downtown.
[image]Sulkbrarian_508037 15.jpg[/image]

The "new" courthouse.
[image]Sulkbrarian_136068 9398.jpg[/image]

No special reason. :)

xoxo S.

P.S. I forgot! Did anyone see Charlie Rose's interview with Laurie Anderson the other night? I only caught the last half; forgot it was coming on. But what I saw was wonderful...she talked about all kinds of lovely things, like her big music writing project for an enormous public garden in Japan (you get a listening device as you walk through), being the artist-in-residence for NASA, and deciding to walk from Milan to Paris on a whim. Sigh. :) She also performed a few seconds' worth of a piece in which she puts one of those newfangled pillow speakers in her mouth and amplifies her humming...and then at the end, Chuck says, "Give my regards to Mr. Reed". Heehee! What did they discuss for the first half of the show, anyone? Bueller?? Thanks!

Mini photoblog for you:

Sad attempt to grow sage and summer savory. Rosemary ok, thyme ok, lemon basil and lemon balm go for launch...there is now citrus mint in the square pot, and yes, I do know those animals are scary...
[image]Sulkbrarian_126697 25.jpg[/image]

Coming along: sweet basil, flat-leaf parsley, cilantro, chives, oregano, chervil, purple ruffle basil.
[image]Sulkbrarian_123953 8526.jpg[/image]

More of the same but outside. The mint I had to put in after a failed spearmint experiment, and it's Kentucky Colonel mint. Juleps and mojitos, anyone? :P
[image]Sulkbrarian_223362 333.jpg[/image]

My pretty peonies.

[image]Sulkbrarian_119162 490.jpg[/image]

What the heck is this? It was very soft and fuzzy.
[image]Sulkbrarian_132001 6095.jpg[/image]

I had fallen in love with fuschia, not often seen in these parts, when I visited DJ in Seattle and noted tons of it growing happily here and there. Stumbled on several baskets of it in a local greenhouse recently, but whoa, too rich for my blood, at $15-20 per basket!
[image]Sulkbrarian_661851 974.jpg[/image]

But the other day at another nursery, this one was in a broken basket and marked down to $2.74 (???) so I rescued it! Score!
[image]Sulkbrarian_738389 847.jpg[/image]

You're prolly sick of this stuff by now but LOOK!!
[image]Sulkbrarian_303632 351.jpg[/image]

And, LOOK!!

Okay. Enough. Be back in a bit. :)

A Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there! Enjoy your day. :) Here's an "awww!" for ya, courtesy my friend E. (sleeping here with his son, A., and stealthily photographed by wife and mother L.). If I were L., I'd tell them boys to get they lazy asses outta bed and fix me some breakfast:
[image]Sulkbrarian_878379 835.jpg[/image]

Once more, I've thieved a nifty quiz idea from a fellow tBlogger. It happens. :) The idea is to answer the questions in song lyrics. Go!

WHO ARE YOU?
I’m the fastest girl around.

HOW DO YOU FEEL?
There were 87 Advil in the bottle
Now there’s thirty left
I ate 47
So what happened to the other ten?

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
I’ve been for a walk
And every face I see seems to be mine.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO?
Let me kiss your sweet lips one more time.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE?
I could watch the dreams flicker in your eyes;
Lying here asleep on a sunbeam
I wonder if you realize you fascinate me so…

WHAT DO YOU HATE?
T-I-R-E-D spells it! Spells it! Spells it!

WHAT DO YOU SAY TO SOMEONE YOU LOVE?
You know what, Stuart? I like you...you’re not like the other people, here in the trailer park.

WHAT DO YOU SAY TO SOMEONE YOU HATE?
And as the spotlights fade away,
And you’re escorted through the foyer
You will resume your callow ways,
But I was meant for the stage.

WHAT EXACTLY IS LIFE?
It's all right 'cause the historical pattern has shown
How the economical cycle tends to revolve
In a round of decades three stages stand out in a loop
A slump and war then peel back to square one and back for more...

WHAT DID YOU DO TODAY?
I returned a bag of groceries
Accidentally taken off the shelf
Before the expiration date.

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?
I should be suspended from class;
I don’t know my elbow from my arse.

WHAT ARE YOU?
I am a scientist; I seek to understand me.

WHAT ARE YOUR FRIENDS TO YOU?
There’s so many people to see;
So many people you can check upon
And add to your collection.

WHAT IS VALUABLE TO YOU?
It must just be the colors
And the kids
That keep me alive.

EXPLAIN YOURSELF (PERSONALITY):
Could I be excused if I presume
That it’s more than disappointment that we share?

WHAT CAN'T YOU DO?
Type slowly.

Hoo boy.
Back to bed now.

xoxo S.

Yowza, I gotta put out some chips 'n dip or somethin' for all my new readers! I hope you all will want to come back. :) We're fresh out of sanity here, and you can always find something to point and laugh at. Right, regulars?

In the last day or two, lots of you have found your way here from the unparalleled Ms. Jessamyn West's opus, librarian.net. You've come to read my post below regarding the appalling lack of niceties in Libraryland. An update for you! Here's what I wrote to the author of the letter I reprinted, helhathno_fury[ /i]:

Dear fury,

Hiya. I was so entranced and fired up and in agreement with your recent open letter to library directors that I've taken the liberty of reposting it on my blog. I hope that this is all right with you--I was trying to write you from my yahoo addy (sulkyisadoorknob@yahoo.com), but have gotten a notice that it bounced back to me. I've given you credit of course and noted that I was writing you for permission to reprint, but that in the meantime, I just thought it was too good not to repost. I am in the same boat...I'd love to talk to you offlist more, if you would be agreeable! It helps to know there are others out there who are struggling just the same, and who are as disgusted and fed up with the often dehumanizing process of jobhunting in Libraryland...it sure can be a mess out there, can't it!

At any rate, one good side effect is that Jessamyn West linked to my post at librarian.net. It's gotten a ton of hits in the last 24 hours, so others are also reading your wisdom and sharp insights.

My blog: http://sulkbrarian.tblog.com....

You take care--and thank you for putting perfectly into words the deep frustration and annoyances we are feeling. The very best of luck to you, and please feel free to write me here or leave comments on my blog! Looking forward to talking with you!

Yours always,
Sulky Whatshername, Any University USA, '02
(and still looking in public libraries...hahaha)

No response as yet--will give ya a heads up when I hear something! Take care, and happy hunting...

Your humble hostess. Canape?

The hell is this crap? What kinda tradeoff is this? I mean, yay, the Pixies have reformed...BUT? Guided by Voices are calling it quits? All in the same year? Are you kidding me? Mmph…

And: we have simply got to find a way to get this girl...

[image]Sulkbrarian_123604 3950.jpg[/image]

...to quit that band of hers and join up with Sleater-Kinney. That, or go solo. I want to hear different stuff coming out of her mouth, this instant, because she's got the vocal cords to really blow people away. She ain't no rock-n-roll fun right now.

Tangent: Okay. Flag on the play. It's gone too far.

Go see Mista Jazz an’ make him smile.

Go see Becca, Nettie, Kansas, Robin, Trish, and anyone else you can think of who fits this category, and wish them luck and/or congratulations on their final push this semester in liberry skool. If you know them, buy them some sort of libation. :)

Go see Pinky and spend hours ogling her fantastic masterpiece of perfectly delightful minutiae. That girl got some bloggin’ chops, yo.

Remember, over there? My first menu bar?--- It’s a scroll down bar. There’s more library/librarian-type blogs below. There's a bunch more you should visit, underneath the fabulous Hand Sanitizer.

Awesomeness.

I’m scared to ask what they were looking for, or what it says about me, but somehow, peeps have found fling fling! using the following search queries:

Casual fling
Japanese slippers
Is it just a fling?
What do you think about the John Hinckley case?
The war on drinks
Older womens for younger mens porn
Will Smith Men in Black black suits comin free an easy

All rightie.

Moving on! Takin’ a hard left here. ("Hard Left"! That was also one of my radio show names! It was a pun on how you say, being “stuck at the left of the dial”, a la the Replacements. It was also supposed to have something to do with the “and now for something completely different!” mood of the show. And it was infinitely better than “Indie Rawk Bar-b-que”, which was my roommate‘s suggestion. But this is not my main point.)

For those of you still awake, I’m going to explain now, for no good reason, about a speshul local hub of social activity, and its' seedy underbelly. I recently stumbled upon this secret horror, and I feel it's my duty to expose it to the world. Ready?

If you live where I do, you want someplace where you can buy your Big Smiths and your rock candy and your deer hunting stuff and your rototillers and your tractors and your weathervanes and your livestock pens and your horse tack and your cattle feed and your Mason jars all in the same store. Dig? Now that place is called a "country store". It's like Wal-Mart for farmers. And all is well and good until...you come upon their crazed genetic farm animal experiments in the aisle. (I'm really excited to see who's going to find my blog now using the string "farm animal experiments", aren't you?) To wit:

These sick bastards have taken regular farm animals...and shrunk them to a fraction of their original size! Madness; it must be stopped!
[image]Sulkbrarian_169612 577.jpg[/image]

Not only that--they've cut off their heads and made toys out of them! The maniacs!
[image]Sulkbrarian_114691 5821.jpg[/image]

I mean one day, you're...
[image]Sulkbrarian_107165 6701.jpg[/image]

And the next day? Microscopic Duplo toys for spoiled farm children! How can these ghouls sleep at night? Fortunately, I was able to free a gaggle of ducks during the shrinking process!
[image]Sulkbrarian_730138 640.jpg[/image]

I'm okay, officer. Honest.
xoxo Sulky

Love ya like a sister
05.02.04 (6:58 pm)   [edit]
If you start adding up all the people you were friendly with in college, it will astound you. Go ahead, get a piece of paper, and start writing. It just goes on and on. Is that not amazing? I just did this, feeling nostalgic, and I can't get over it. I never made friends as easily, of such diverse backgrounds, with such diverse interests, as those I made in college. Nor as many in as short a timeframe. These women were truly my friends; my really good friends, not merely acquaintances. I had easily three or four times as many casual friends as this. That fact also astounds me because in my head I am something of a wallflower. How could someone as marginally socially inept as I have made this many friends? I don't get it!

What’s more, and infinitely regrettable: I have lost touch with most of them, and there’s just nothing I wouldn’t give to have them back right now. I need them. What just floors me about this little exercise is the mere fact that I had 45 truly, honestly good friends once...friends that I made in a span of only a few short years. That’s like…a king’s ransom. Incredible. How could I have not known I had this many friends? I should have cherished them more and hung onto them longer. They were all smart, kind, beautiful, funny, quirky, unique, wonderful women (we went to a small women's college). I did not know how rich I was--what a mistake. Lots of people manage to stay in contact with their college friends; I didn’t. Shameful. I don't go to reunions, and a lot of these women aren't "reunion types", either. I've Googled most of them, and...I would love to get back in touch, but it just seems so awkward now. You know?

Recently, I was talking with one of my current good girlfriends about how precious and important our girlfriends are, and how we need them, and how they need us, and how we should never take them for granted. That sounds hypocritical based on my own history, but I wasn't as smart about these things when I was younger. Although I sure wish I'd realized all of this before I let these women slip out of my life.

And it would seem I've still not entirely learned the lesson, as I’ve neglected several of my library school friends of late, and I really must remedy that before it's too late. If they are reading, know I love you, and even if I don't write or call, you are always with me. I don't know why I am hesitant sometimes about writing or calling...that's what gets me into trouble, and how I've managed to lose all these undergrad friends.

So, in memoriam, even though they will likely never see this, my list of those wonderful friends whom I let get away:
