Too much (clap clap) time on my hands
08.14.04 (4:47 pm)   [edit]

Well, actually, no, but I just had to say this:

"Dear NBC,

Hi. You don't know me. But I used to be a professional broadcaster. By "professional", I mean, quite the opposite of Katie Couric and Bob Costas. Their "color" during the Athens Olympic Opening Ceremonies was infantile, excessive, unimaginative, uninformative, sardonic, sarcastic, ignorant of mood and atmosphere, and entirely superfluous. Professional broadcasters shut up when Bjork is singing about the damn ocean wearing a damn ocean dress. Professional broadcasters don't feel it necessary to make a four-hour spectacle all about them. Professional broadcasters (like the late great and sorely-missed Jim McKay) understand we've got TV sets in the house and therefore can, you know, SEE what's happening, and don't actually need it explained to death. Professional broadcasters elevate their dialogue to match the elevated intellects of far more of the audience than Katie and Bob, apparently, give credit for existing at all. Are you hiring? Because I could crap a better show in a drunken coma than you paid these two yahoos millions of dollars for. I'll do it for free. I'm serious. That is, if there's any show showing between the commercials. Thanks. I'll be waiting for your call. Love, Sulky."

Y'all take care, II'll check in again right soon. I'm off to enjoy roadside diners and to look at all that corn again. How can there be any corn left in the state of Iowa? It would seem Illinois has it all!

Love you folks, S.

P.S.--Many of you live near where the high winds are blowin' down there in the southeastern quadrant of these United States. My thoughts and wishes for safety are with you--do take care, and here's hoping everyone you know comes through all right. :)

Memo to Human Resources...
08.11.04 (11:18 am)   [edit]

...Sulky need a job! Heehee.

But in addition to that little tidbit, it's one of the many fabulous songs on the new John2 offering, "The Spine". It includes familiar material from fanclub downloads, and lots and lots of new pleasantness. The "Indestructible Object" EP (which also includes the snazzy "Memo to Human Resources") was a nice little appetizer for this gem (of course, if TMBG put out a double live album called "Excrement: Tunes from the Toilet", I'd be first in line, so I may be ever-so-slightly biased). Those of you enjoying TMBG on the road this summer--I hate you! I'm just playin'; the Johns don't hate, an' neitha should I. But my point! If you have not done so, you should immediately purchase "The Spine" and join me in cutting a rug this evening. Wee; sigh. Oh...and Liam? You're entitled to your opinion, of course, and as I say, I'm especially biased...but who said the band was required by law not to change their sound? That's all they've been doing, from album to album, for decades. Sorry if that disturbs you; maybe you'd feel more comfortable just sitting at home playing the same records over and over and never leaving the house! (Oh wait, that's what I do. Never mind!)

Yessir, they got trouble, right there in the Sunflower State. I don't envy the KLA right about now, nossir.

Well, hell. It looks like I'm going to miss Bumbershoot...again. If you live out that way, knock yerselves out, and save me a program guide!

Meanwhile, down in Athens Gee-Ay, lucky Gretchen gets to witness this! Yay!

Speakin' of John2, Little John came through town here last week, spent the night, awoke refreshed and ready to rumble, spoke to a decent-sized crowd and gave them a real thrill with actual, you know, discourse and ideas (I know, it sounds odd, but there didn't appear to be any ventriloquism involved!), and hied himself on up to Saint Looey to meet up with Big John for their old-fashioned whistlestop tour. The train includes a car from HST's fabled tour, in a nice homey nod to history. These little touches are of course thrown in for people just like me, but I don't care. It's nice anyway. :)

Still can't upload pix. Stories with pix backing up into netherregions of brain. Will hopefully solve soon--you folks like your purty pitchers as much as I do.

Headed back to sister's Sunday, hope to blog before then a bit, but if not I will see you from the road. Many thanks to you kindly folk again for your well-wishes--they are returned to you a hundredfold, in all your endeavors. :) Thinkin' of all of ye. Keep yer unit on, as they say.

xoxo love Sulky

Fakey blogroll!
08.05.04 (8:32 pm)   [edit]

Evenin'. I'd just like to give a shout-out here to m' boy cousins. As unemployment coooooooooooooooonTINues to kick my ass, I've been blessed with all kindsa friends--some old, some new, some borrowed, some blue--and my boy cousins have been most supportive too, frequently distracting me with shiny things and lots of delicious beer. Basically, it's like "Little Men" around here--they're what I have instead of brothers! So to you, gentlemen, a health.

Sidenote: music 'zine a l'il bit on hold right now but we will be gearing up before long. Look out. :) Plan to answer your emails regarding such, and to knock on some of your doors for submissions too, if you're interested!

Sigh. Lucky Pinky, James, and Robin, and their respective lucky pals for getting to watch Camera Obscura "twee it up a bit" at Mergefest 15 ...it sounds like it was a grand time, with really squishy yummy bands, and I am not at all jealous of missing it, nope, nosiree, not this girl. Double sigh! :D

Onto the fakey blogroll! We here at fling fling!, by the by, realize that we have become officially embarrassed by our blog. It lacks both good form and fresh content, and you know, if I cared more, why, I'd do something about it. As it is, I just say, sue me. :) But I do feel bad because I've been awfully slow to point out these peeps here; terribly remiss! And hey, Luddite Librarian...where'd you run off to again, sweetie?
